So here is the problem. Indeed we are a country that thrives on thinking how special and how ahem chosen we are. I got to watch it this week in what our MSM choses to show disaster wise.
Why would our media show us Haiti in it's horrific details, failures et al? Well it makes us feel ahem, special. We can help Haitians get out of that crisis and feel that we are so damn superior...
Compare to our neighbor to the South and Karl. Yes, IT IS a major disaster... but let's compare this to Katrina, shall we?
This is 48 hours into the disaster...
Katrina... Air Operations were ongoing (BRAVO USCG)... but nobody had a clue as to really how many casualties were already there. We knew things were getting from bad to worst thanks to media critters in the Astrodome...
Karl... Air Operations are ongoing... relief operations are ongoing, shelters are fully operational, and the President of Mexico has already gone to the disaster area and had a walk about.
Do indeed compare this
To this...
No wonder our lame stream media has not bothered to cover this MAJOR disaster in the country to the south of us...
And yes it is nasty... yes upwards of half a million (one report said one million) people have lost all they own... but do compare... the images speak volumes.
And it helps that we are very provincial and if it ain't happening in the US, it ain't happening.
Now on a serious note... this is the second major event for Calderon... yes... kiddies... this is global weather change at work. But if we are ever to escape the ills of provincialism we need to grow a pair, and realize that there is a world beyond our fucking borders and that some folks actually can do things without uncle sam. And this is also the way out of American Exceptionalism. It is kind of hard to be exceptional when one becomes part of the world... and it is high time we do.
