All tax matters must originate in the House of Representatives.
Article I, Section 7 specifically states: All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.
The House is the body that needs to pass this before the election. If the Senate doesn't act, well so be it. They couldn't stand up to the GOP when they had 59 or even 60 votes, so what makes anyone think things will be that different if a couple of Senators are defeated.
Not that I am calling for a few Senators to be defeated. I like them all, even the so-called Blue Dogs. They help structure the Senate and in this day and age of money ruling the roost, it may be all we can expect from the so-called "Higher" chamber.
But if the House passes a bill before the election keeping tax cuts for the working families and raising taxes on the owner class, then they will have made a statement that the American people should see. The House democrats can help the Senate by passing these changes in the Bush Tax cuts and making the Republicans vote down a tax cut for the middle class.
If the GOP goes along with it, miracles can happen ever now and then but I wouldn't bet your money on it, then that places the Senate, both parties, in a quandary.
Anyway, the House Dem's have got to do the right thing. They need to extend the lower brackets and let the "temporary" cuts for the top brackets lapse.
If not, then we will have essentially turned the government over to the Party of No.
