2. Shirtsleeves up, boys.
Boehner couldn't help but do up those collar buttons though, and that'll cost him "commoner points" for sure.

Hopefully they all remembered to have the help skip today's shoe shine session.

5. Their choice of dress is part of their message.
Clothing is often used to convey a message...an idea. A means of being approachable and identifying with your audience.

21. Then maybe you shouldn't have participated in this thread.
I don't care for those who "supervise" DU discussions without being offered that authority by the admins.

32. i am not supervising...
any more than you are...this is just a little shallow to me. i think focusing on what is in that document as opposed to what is on his back is more beneficial...

so, go tell someone else what threads they should and should not participate in...supervisor-extraordinaire.

40. The point is the irony of the image they are trying to portray.
Clearly, they are trying to appear as though they are hard working, "regular Americans" who "roll up their sleeves and get to work". Could anything be further from the truth?

To me, this is much more relvant than say, Sarah Palin's choice to wear open toed high heels in winter, or her big hair. This is more relevant than John Boehner's skin color.

It is manipulation. Subliminal propaganda.

41. i agree with your points about Palin and Boner...
it IS relevant, but it is a common tactic. all pols do it...they are chameleons and that is a terrible insult to chameleons but it is the best i could come up with with my cold-addled brain.

23. Same reason we focused on it when Bush did it after Katrina.
and his dressing to convey the message that he's working hard for the people...when he so clearly wasn't and never did.

to point out the hypocrisy between the message and the reality....

Pointing out the tactics used isn't a bad thing.

But I think - and I'm just speaking for me - that pointing out forms of manipulation isn't a bad thing. Especially this particular kind of manipulation.

to portray themselves as working class.

The hypocrisy cries out for exposure.

I would like to think folks aren't fooled by this shit, but I can't. Remember * in New Orleans? Then the lights went out, the set got rolled up and on to more fucking the people of the United States they went. All while wearing blue open collar dress shirts with rolled up sleeves, like they've ever worked a day in thier lives.

He doesn't look like he spent the day cutting up a downed tree with another days work to go. That tan doesn't look like what I get spending day after day in the sun to make sure the vegetables were enough to last through the winter.
Those palms look pretty soft for a working man, no sign of blisters or cuts. Looks like just another poser.
