Fox News Viewership Plunges 21% While MSNBC Grows
Posted on September 29, 2010 by Jason Easley
S

The cable news ratings for the third quarter of 2010 were released today, and Fox News is showing signs of decline as their viewership has decreased by 21%, and their top shows all posted double digit losses, while MSNBC’s shows, grew and the network attracted more younger viewers.

Fox News is still dominating the cable news ratings. The network has the top 11 programs in cable news, but there are ominous signs that the empire is starting to crack. Compared to the third quarter of 2009, Fox has lost 21% of their total viewers, and 26% of their younger viewers. The biggest loser on the network was Bill O’Reilly who saw his program The O’Reilly Factor lost 12% of its total viewers and 21% of its young viewers. Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bret Baier, and Greta Van Susteren rounded out the top five cable news shows, and they each posted double digit declines.

1. There audience is the GOP (grumpy old peoples) party they
will gradually die off. When you think about it they don't have a very good business model, everyone knows the TV networks key audience are younger viewers. So their most loyal viewers are dieing off and the younger ones are to smart to be attracted to their BS.

136. Oh, right--me young? I WAS young once....
Dinosaurs roamed the earth once, too.

As for the Grim Reaper, he has been busy felling friends and relatives, so maybe my survival has only
been a mixed blessing at best (or, if you ask a few Republicans I know, an outright disaster! LOL).

Maybe I'll get it printed and framed one day, but I could fill the National Archives with pics of me and
Helen--we've known each other for decades, and I see Howard regularly, too.

The ones one my wall are a photo of FDR personally dedicated to "his friend," my grandfather, and one
of JFK that my dad got Pierre Salinger (friend and neighbor 1961-1963) to get JFK to dedicate to me for
my eleventh birthday, one of Bobby Kennedy, Sr., dedicated "with high regard" to my father, etc.

Not all old people are grumpy. And Fox News, like its main beneficiary, the GOP is following a model that if they don't reverse it will eventually drive them to extinction or near-extinction - being the news channel/political party for white, older Americans.

94. However, they do win the prime demographic convincingly.
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/the-scoreboard-tuesday-september-28_b33110

On Tuesday they had more prime time viewers in the 25-54 demo than CNN, MSNBC, and HLN combined.

And they do even better than that in the older demographic, but that is scary because people in that demographic vote more frequently than any other age group. MSNBC is strongest with younger viewers, that same group that votes less than any other.

The most reactionary people in America today are old (and white, for that matter). And, yep, they watch Fox.

It simply does not follow, though, that all old people are grumpy reactionaries. These are the George Wallace voters in their senior years.

66. Alternet and a few other sites have had articles on this question
Here's the Alternet link: http://www.alternet.org/story/147436/why_women_dominate_the_right-wing_tea_party/
July 5, 2010
Why Women Dominate the Right-Wing Tea Party
Without its grassroots female supporters, the Tea Party would have far less appeal to voters frightened by economic insecurity and the disappearance of a white Christian culture.

Why have American women become so active in the right-wing Tea Party movement? Could it be that they are drawn to the new conservative Christian feminism publicized by Sarah Palin? Without its grassroots female supporters, the Tea Party would have far less appeal to voters who are frightened by economic insecurity, threats to moral purity and the gradual disappearance of a national white Christian culture.

Here's another piece, from US News and World Report---but it's very clearly biased to the right. The author's credentials make that clear: He is a contributing editor at U.S. News & World Report. A former senior political writer for United Press International, he is currently a senior fellow at the Institute for Liberty and at Let Freedom Ring, a non-partisan public policy organization (Yeah, right, Let Freedom Ring" is a NON-PARTISAN organization---my comment). His writing has also appeared on Fox News' Fox Forum.

The Tea Party Movement Is a Women's Movement http://politics.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/peter-roff/2010/09/23/the-tea-party-movement-is-a-womens-movement
By PETER ROFF
Posted: September 23, 2010

To the extent that it is run by anyone, the Tea Party movement is--like all great social movements--largely run by women.

Many of the movement’s most important political figures, like former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Minnesota GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann, are women. Many of its important writers, bloggers, and commentators--like S.E. Cupp, Dana Loesch, Kathleen McKinley, and Michelle Moore--are women. And you are more likely than not going to see a woman like Jenny Beth Martin of the Tea Party Patriots, Amy Kremer of the Tea Party Express, or FreedomWorks’s Tabitha Hale out front leading rallies, organizing activists, and driving the point home that the American people are fed up with the government in Washington. .....

From SLATE

Is the Tea Party a Feminist Movement?
It's becoming an insta-network for aspiring female candidates.

By Hanna Rosin
Posted Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 12:03 PM ET
...
If the Tea Party has any legitimate national leadership, it is dominated by women. Of the eight board members of the Tea Party Patriots who serve as national coordinators for the movement, six are women. Fifteen of the 25 state coordinators are women. One of the three main sponsors of the Tax Day Tea Party that launched the movement is a group called Smart Girl Politics. The site started out as a mommy blog and has turned into a mobilizing campaign that trains future activists and candidates. Despite its explosive growth over the last year, it is still operated like a feminist cooperative, with three stay-at-home moms taking turns raising babies and answering e-mails and phone calls. Spokeswoman Rebecca Wales describes it as a group made up of "a lot of mama bears worried about their families." The Tea Party, she says, is a natural home for women because "for a long time people have seen the parties as good-ole'-boy, male-run institutions. In the Tea Party, women have finally found their voice."...

There are many more articles if you google on "why women teaparty"

You may have seen that there's a brouhaha going on with a proposed Women's Museum.

After seeing that the MALE tea-party senator Jim DeMint opposes a Women's Museum, it's hard to claim that the teabagging is a feminist movement.

Tea Party Senate Leader Jim DeMint Stops Women’s Museum
http://www.taylormarsh.com/2010/09/30/tea-party-senate-leader-jim-demint-stops-womens-museum/
30 September 2010 9:44 am by Taylor Marsh
This shouldn’t be surprising, because Republicans were also against the Lily Ledbetter Act. But it’s really remarkable in the 21st century when right-wing Senate Tea Party leader Jim DeMint puts a hold on a women’s museum, because he thinks the only thing women are known for is being abortion rights advocates. Now Sen. Tom Coburn is helping DeMint do it. I wonder if Sarah Palin supports these actions, too? This is what the Republican Tea Party stands for today, the marginalizing of women on the most extreme terms. Something all Independents thinking of joining their ranks should note.
From USA Today:
The House passed the bill last year. Unless the Senate takes it up soon, supporters will have to start over with a new Congress next year.
“What they are doing is holding us to a standard that no museum associated with men has ever been held to,” museum CEO Joan Wages said. “The content of the museum is being questioned, and it hasn’t even been built. The Holocaust museum, the African-American history museum, the Native American museum — they all had very little money in the bank when Congress passed their legislation.” ....

72. Don't discount the ethnic factor, either.
They've only got less than %2 African-American viewers. I'm not sure how many Hispanic viewers they've got, but thanks to their anti-immigration, racist rantings, they've turned off the only right-winger in my large Hispanic family. My sister now has veered away from them completely. She started out innocently enough with only a basic anti-abortion stance about ten years ago, then got sucked in by the American Life League and from there to associated winger websites that had her telling me Obama's mother-in-law practised voo-doo in the White House. I don't know if all this has made the scales finally fall from her eyes--doubtful, she's been drinking the Kool-aid too long--but, Faux really put her off with their All Racism, All Day.

18. Of their 1.8 million viewers during primetime...
about 1.3 million are 55 and over. That is where they get all their numbers from. About 8/20 of MSNBC's viewers are in the young category, whereas it is about 4/20 of Fox is younger viewers. Nearly half compared to less than a fourth. Regardless, cable news is a tiny demographic of the general population that is biased in many ways and can't tell you much about the politics of the country at large.

lot of cable packages so they are competing with a handicap to begin with. I still don't understand the popularity of FOX unless it's the bimbo factor of their blond, female anchors with the tight clothes and short skirts. It means their watchers are looking and not listening because if they listened they would be appalled.

95. How do you explain Gallup's finding, just released today, that 48% of respondents say the media is
too liberal, while only 15% say it is too conservative? If that is the case then there must be some other excuse for Fox's declining ratings. It can't be because people think it is too conservative, assuming that this poll is accurate.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/gallup-distrust-in-the-media_b33215

Personally, I think that Fox's decline has more to do with the normal ebb and flow of ratings than anything else. In broadcasting, all networks have such an ebb and flow, and it is to be expected from time to time. Yet just this last Tuesday Fox got more viewers in prime time than MSNBC, CNN, and HLN combined in the 25-54 demo. It doesn't look to me that they are hurting that much.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/the-scoreboard-tuesday-september-28_b33110

And the OP conveniently left out that CNN has declined even more than Fox. I expect Fox to pick up more and more as we get closer to the election, given the enthusiasm that the GOP base has about the election.

They seem to have tried to brand themselves as the lukewarm center between the fire and ice of MSNBC and Fox (Spinal Tap reference intentional) :). Poor guys, they're learning too late that people like watching the vitriol on both sides. I know I do! Plus they're in limbo at the key 8 pm time slot, getting destroyed by Olbermann and Bill-O.

141. Fox News, CNN, CNBC Among Most Valuable Cable Networks
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fox-news-cnn-cnbc-among-most-valuable-cable-networks_b33283#more-33283

The Daily Beast’s Peter Lauria writes about the 25 most valuable cable networks, and three news channels made the list. Data for the story came from SNL Kagan.

The top ranked news network on the list was Fox News Channel, which Lauria says is the fourth most valuable channel in cable, behind only ESPN, Nickelodeon and TNT. 2010 revenues are estimated to be $1.5 billion, with the network worth an estimated $11.4 billion.

CNN is 12th overall, with 2010 revenues estimated to be around $1.2 billion, and a total value of $6.1 billion.

CNBC was ranked 15th, with 2010 revenues estimated to be around $715 million, and a total value of $4.4 billion.

Your OP is a good spin, but anyway you want to cut it, Fox News dominates.
