The House’s No. 2 Republican and a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee traded sharp barbs over the future of Social Security on Sunday, days ahead of an expected announcement that recipients won’t get an increase in benefits next year.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, DNC Vice Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz accused Republicans of wanting to “yank the safety net out from under our seniors” by trying to privatize the Social Security program.

Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 House Republican, said on the same talk show that his party doesn’t want to deprive seniors of their Social Security or Medicare benefits.

“We intend to deal with the real question of long-term fiscal sustainability of those programs and hence our economy,” said Cantor.
