SENATOR HARRY REID TELLS A WHOPPER IN CAVING IN TO BUSH

The Democratic majority leader in the Senate announced Tuesday that his party is caving into Bush and supporting funding of the Iraq war with no call for withdrawal by a date certain, aka "timelines." In so doing he told a mighty lie, as quoted in the New York Times.
“We don’t have a veto-proof Congress.”

But that is not true. The Senate can mount a filibuster against the war-funding bill. And that kills it. There can be no veto of that. Bush would then be forced to come back with an acceptable bill and veto alternative bills providing for the safe and rapid return of US forces.

Therefore, we must redouble our efforts to get more signatures on our Filibuster petition. Please ask as many people as you can to go to www.FilibusterForPeace.org and sign the petition. And if you live in the state of a Senator who might start the filibuster, ratchet up the pressure. (Kennedy in MA, Feingold in WI, Leahy in VT, Byrd in W. VA, Boxer in CA, etc.) We must act now.

Thank you again for supporting FilibusterForPeace.

1. I would not care if Prez Shit-for-Brains had to veto it 1000 times. It should be sent back to him
over and over and over...Let Dimson get writer's cramp from vetoing it.

20. Absolutely.
The only thing the Bush-holes respect is the exercise of authority.

They should have stood their ground unwavering.

You can't show weakness to pack animals. They failed.

I, too, wish they had the guts to do the filibuster thing as well, but with liebermann threatening to jump ship at every turn, we're running out of options.

33. I really can't disagree with you re: backbone, but....
I just thought the language was a bit strong. I can't believe they caved on this issue. Why do they think the American people threw the last bums out? I have to have faith that they've got something else in the works. That being said, I realize they don't have a veto proof majority, and the standoff possibly would hurt them politically? I don't know.....

35. Don't disagree with you either....
but if Liebermann officially crosses over, where does that leave Senate leadership? If we had a larger majority in the Senate, Liebermann would be totally irrelevant. However, I would just assume he go ahead and make the switch, and quit threatening his Democratic colleagues. He is so full of himself, and the only reason he hasn't crossed over is that he is more effective as the "maverick" who bucks the majority party.....

The constitution gives it sole power on declarations of war and the purse. What exactly has changed?

7. This Is Ridiculous In Premise Right? Filibuster A Spending Bill? Ain't That The Same Difference As
just simply defunding the war altogether? If the latter has gained no ground in Congress, how in the heck is the former going to have any chance whatsoever? I'm a bit confused by this call to action. Am I missing something or is it the same as saying "call Congress and tell them to send a bill calling for the troops to come home immediately" or "call congress and tell them to defund the troops!". It's all just the same twist on the same thing right?

This is just coming off as a silly request to me. Does anyone really think for a nanosecond that the Senate would filibuster its own funding bill?

23. I Always Get Such A Kick Out Of It When Posters Say That. It's Quite Humoring.
Each time I've replied, including this time, this thread was already within the top 10 or less on the page. Therefore, my kicks supply no benefit to you whatsoever. I always laugh when someone says that cause it's like they're trying to act as though I still helped them somehow or something even though I found the premise severely misguided. Really really silly concept. Feel free to put your thumb away LOL

...feel they should. Most Dems, and some Pukes, want out of this retched conflict. To be frank, the people who vote, and contribute to campaigns are divided. That's the problem.

Why is this douchebag the leader of the party? When are the Democrats actually going to start acting like they have a goddamn backbone? How long ago did the Republicans stop taking the Democrats seriously because they know the Dems will clearly NEVER do A FUCKING THING ABOUT ANYTHING. I am disgusted with 98% of the Dems. Why can't they all be like Feingold?

28. There is no veto-proof majority
A filibuster doesn't constitute a veto-proof majority, it's nonsense to even say so. Bush is not a rational person, so even if there was a filibuster, he still might not cooperate.

32. Faulty Premise
It assumes that there wouldn't be enough votes for cloture on a funding bill. And that assumption almost certainly wrong. Start with 49 repub votes plus Lieberman. Find 10 Democrats who can read the polls and recognize that the public overall doesn't support immediate defunding (even though the public does support a timetable for withdrawal) and who figure that they are from states that lean somewhat red and thus probably have an even electorate that is probably more hostile to immediate defunding than the overall populace. Here, I'll name 10 for you: Baucus, Conrad, Dorgan, Landrieu, Nelson, Nelson, Lincoln, Tester, Salazar, Pryor. Probably could throw Webb in for good measure, since I doubt he would vote for immediate defunding.

34. i simply don't get it. WHY WHY WHY?????
bush was SCREWED. and everyone knew it. ALL they had to do is keep sending him bills with a deadline. it was bush who was looking like the petulant three-year old he so clearly is, not the democrats. his approval rating is getting WORSE. and now they talk of renewing the 'surge' in september for another six months? while they themselves scurry away as fast as they can from their 'base' by avoiding the fallwell funeral. they aren't gonna impress any of their pet fundies by doing that.

so, can someone explain to me WHY the democrats have once again capitulated?
