RANT -- Keep your Christian College Comments to YOURSELF
I'm sick to frigging DEATH of these assholes that think it is their RIGHT to announce they are Christians, and they attended *Christian* colleges!

It does NOT make you a better citizen -- it does NOT make you a better public servant.

What BETTER way to divide a country than to wear your religion on your sleeve in public? What BETTER way to piss off those of us who really worry that there is a very REAL problem with our government -- the problem being THESE VERY people.

11. He pointed out their dismal record on passing the bar
Half couldn't on the first try. He said something about Regent School graduates comprising a majority of positions at the DOJ. Monica said she thought Harvard and Yale grads still outnumbered Regent grads and he said, " Well, that's refreshing." There was some grunts from the repiggies when he said that. :applause:

5. "If you were really a Christian, I could figure it out for myself"
I know I'm mangling that quote, but the point is still a valid one.

Or it would be, if Christians had any sort of monopoly on decency,
honor, or truthfulness like the fake ones think they do.

Apparently being a christian means you have no desire to be held accountable for your sinful actions.

20. She just managed to torpedo any moral superiority
those institutions claim to instill. Her corruption and stupidity have both been on parade to everyone out there who has their set tuned to these investigations. Yes, it's a small percentage of Americans, but that small percentage will talk about this to everyone they know, bet on it.

More and more people are starting to admit that not only the Emperor, but all his supporters have no clothes.

21. Those who would be fooled are fools.
I understand. We're trying to get the votes and hearts and minds of those fools. Or rather, we don't want those fools being fooled.

But these people should be quaking in their shoes for the thought that there really is a god.

What I mean is, there are fools and there is a reality. All we can do is tell and reveal the truth. But these asses will be judged by a much greater power than ourselves. And yes, I am a Christian. I just don't fucking wear it on my sleeve. In fact I hide it. It's not important in the least that anyone know about it.

Jesus felt/feels exactly as you do about this same situation. Bragging about being a Christian is an arrogant act. In essence, it's antichristian.

23. It's easier than actually working to become a more decent human being.
For many of us, the hard work of becoming a more conscientious and decent human being is a life-long labor - one that never ends. Such a life is filled with "learning experiences" ... some of which can be difficult to survive. I'm always perplexed that some think it's "automatic" and merely a matter of adopting some label - whether that label is "born-again" or "Christian" or even "Democrat." One's own conscience does not develop and one's own integrity is not improved by mere compliance - that's the stuff of authoritarianism, imho.

25. Ummmmm
I attended a Christian college. It was all about the money. The college I attended had an active Young Democrats chapter in which I was involved and served as an officer. There were other people there who shared my values - and those of the Democratic party. The college I attended has a strong pre-professional program with a history of over 50% of its alums going on to earn graduate and professional degrees. Not exactly the stuff of academic slackers.

I am a believer but I no longer call myself Christian because I have nothing in common with the values of the religious right who have co-opted the term.

I also affirmatively resent those who seem to believe that anyone who attended a Christian college (or holds the Christian faith) is some kind of right wing religious wacko cultist zealot. That is an ignorant bigoted stereotype. It is as unacceptable as assuming a young black man is likely a gang member or a Muslim is a terrorist.

28. Okay -- then YOU address the hate and the fearmongering
of the RW christian churches. And the pandering of certain political figures to the large Christian population in this country.

We seem to have a solid group of Christians in this country who immediately yell "NOT ME" but do nothing. Not even speaking up in public.

But when a non-christian voices criticism -- let's pull out the labels. Of course, if it was a non-christian group being discussed -- that would be different. :sarcasm:

29. .
My dictionary tells me that a stereotype is "a generalization, usually exaggerated or oversimplified and often offensive, that is used to describe or distinguish a group."

Guess what? I am an individual. Not a stereotype. You don't know me. Yet it would appear you have made certain judgments regarding me.

You are wrong. I live in the armpit of the Bible Belt and take advantage of many opportunities to challenge RW Christians in the real world. I have paid some very real personal costs for doing so. I also have a book proposal circulating that addresses the issues of religion and politics. Like most writers I do not have the financial means or distribution network to successfully self-publish on a large scale. The success of my efforts to publish are very much at the discretion of agents and publishers. Just because I do not control the ultimate end of those efforts does not mean I have not tried.

But I doubt you believe that. You'd rather dismiss me because I don't fit into your little box and I don't behave in the ways you expect.

My efforts to challenge RW Christian believers will never be successful in your eyes. You will never see the individuals I talk to who question and then leave the theocrats. Unless you are personally acquainted them they are anonymous. What you see instead is that the theocrats like Robertson and Dobson are still spewing their heresies.

If you are going to presume that Christians are all either some crazy RW religious wacko cultist kook or in denial of the same then you definitely should not expect them to be flocking out of the safety of their churches. Why should they? It is far safer to stay right where they are.

Never mind the fact that you seem to be completely oblivious to the long-term positive efforts of progressive Christian leaders such as Jim Wallis as well as various Christian watchdog efforts such as that of Ole Anthony. There are also a lot a Christian websites that challenge many of the abuses and heresies of the religious right and their leaders.

27. Isn't the idea of a Christian college somewhat of an oxymoron?
I mean college is intended as an idealized quest for knowledge and understanding and, as such, values logic and sound reasoning.

Religion, any religion, is pretty much inherently the arch enemy of logic and reason. Religion cannot survive, much less thrive, amidst logic and reason.

31. Not really. I went to a Lutheran college and it was there
I took logic and philosophy and even attending chapel was not mandatory. It wasn't a cookiecutter place by any means. I also took an excellent class in Marxism-Leninism there and it was EXPLAINED and not condemned!

36. The single best class
I ever had while earning an undergraduate degree, two masters degrees and a law degree was taught in a Christian college. It was a modern philosophy class. The class had something like 20 textbooks. None of the philosophers we read were Christian. Each week we read a book written by a particular philosopher and we wrote a ten page paper relevant to the weeks readings. We also had exams and presentations. One of the things that made the class so special was the old guy who taught it. He was a German academic who had been imprisoned during the holocaust because of his teaching. Surviving the class meant working hard, thinking critically, and articulating and defending one's own views. That required logic, reason and a sense of both internal and external consistency. No one was allowed to use the Bible or faith as a tool to criticize or defend any philosophy.
