Take Action to Restore Habeas Corpus

PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS OF AMERICA - Mobilizing the Progressive Vote

Take Action to Restore Habeas Corpus

Among the most cherished rights in our Constitution is Habeas Corpus, the right to go before a judge if one is detained.

With a complicit Congress and a stroke of his pen on Oct, 17, 2006, President Bush undid eight centuries of legal precedent by signing the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Presented as part of the “War on Terror,” this pen stroke did away with Habeas Corpus. Prisoners are languishing in Guantanamo and elsewhere without knowing the charges against them, and without hope of seeing the inside of a courtroom.

Even worse, there’s nothing to prevent this from happening to American citizens.

Rep. Jerry Nadler is leading the charge to restore Habeas Corpus by trying to add language to the Defense Authorization bill. If that fails, he promises to bring it up again, as an amendment. If that fails, there are http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/issues/alert/?alertid=9769521&PROCESS=Take+Action ">new bills waiting which would undo the damage of last October's Military Commissions Act.

Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots PAC that works both inside the Democratic Party and outside in movements for peace and justice. Our goal: Extend the victory of Nov. 2006 into a permanent, progressive majority. PDA’s advisory board includes six members of Congress and activist leaders such as Tom Hayden, Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin and Rev. Lennox Yearwood. More info: http://pdamerica.org/.
