My feelings are hurt when you pick on Goodlings voice
I am 43 and I sound like a little girl when I talk--not as squeaky as her, but I can't count the times people call and ask to speak to my mother.
Some things you can't help.

14. Baloney! To many women on TV talk like little girls.
It's annoying and, in most cases, an act!!

21. How about
it's always an act. Women who talk like that, as an affectation, completely disgust me. Simpering little twits. And yes, I'm a radical feminist and no, I don't care how this opinion makes me look. She's a collaborator in her own oppression which I wouldn't care about, but the way women like her act definitely affects the way all women are treated.

22. On TV or movies, it's always an act!
They purposely don't project their voice.

It is also a learned 'helplessness' from childhood.

Women, especially teens, (when it starts) need to be told to knock it off!!

26. You said it better
than i did. It is 100% affectation and comes about through operant conditioning. Act like this; this is the result.

IE:: act like a simpering helpless little girl and men will fall all over themselves to help you.

Positive feedback leads to further refining of the behavior, consciously or not.

I can rebuild a car, weld, build a house if that is what I chose to do.
I intimidate most men with my knowledge and my skills.
I had a man friend tell me once that if I would let my hair grow longer and be a little more helpless, I would meet a great guy.:wtf:

32. So you're saying
you speak higher than your natural pitch and with breathy little pauses and add a little nasal action, but every so often a more "adult" sounding voice peeks through?

Because I'm pretty sure that's what we're talking about. It's an affectation. I've seen it and heard it enough to know the difference.

When bitching about Little Miss Monica's voice, do we have to add a disclaimer?

34. Not squeaky at all
Not high pitched. I just have a "little voice" although I have had three major nasal surgeries to correct congenital and internal structural deformities--that may contribute to it.
Whatever it is, it isn't a learned helplessness--at least not in my case.

27. Drew Pinsky...
has often talked about women who have retained their "little girl" voices have often been the victims of sexual abuse as a child. They remain in a developmentally stagnant state that is reflected in their voices.

For years I listened to and watched his show, and when a woman called in with that voice, he would always ask them if they had been abused. It was almost always true.

Now, when I hear that kind of voice, that is all I can think of. :scared:

Model/fashion designer Kathy Ireland had that kind of voice and worked for years with a coach to change hers. It can be done.

33. Wow. Well, that may be true but I also
think the male role models in the house may think it's 'cute' and encourage it
by spoiling the girl who uses that voice so she learns to always use it to get
what she wants! She learns it works for her early!

40. one blond from Saturday Night Live
whose name escapes me, claimed that she could not help the way she sounded. Perhaps she could have changed it with coaching or training, but she was not faking it either.

I kind of stepped in it once when I asked a librarian if she was from another country because she had a slight accent. She said she had a speech defect that made her sound that way. Ooops, but I did not think it was a defect? I think we should be more accepting of differences.

41. I think you mean "physical trait." Neocons don't have any character.
And yes, DUers attacking a public person for reasons of their physical appearance (with the exception of Bush's overly-close eyeballs and Cheney's cetacean-calibre penis) is petty, illiberal, and a slap in the face of our professed beliefs in human dignity.

Sometimes it's funny, but it's always in bad taste.

9. Actually, I agree with Horse with no Name
I'm a guy and don't have a voice like a little girl. That said, I think Goodling's voice is irrelevant to the discussion and snarky comments about it actually do a disservice to that discussion. For me, it's less a matter of hurting HwNN's feelings than a question of introducing irrelevant information into an important hearing that runs the risk of trivializing it.

I have a few girlfriends with squeaky voices who are tough as nails
They kind of do the same thing the female cop did in cop movies. Piss them off and they'll blow your hair back from a standing position.

I certainly don't get mad at every squeaky voice, because of Monica. But there are females that use that voice to get away with bloody murder. And if anyone is using that talent it's Ms. Goodling.

And that really irritates me.

44. lol! If I don't want to talk to whom ever is on the phone, I tell them my mom is out and I'll
take a message. If I know who it is and want to talk, the other person inevitably is embarrassed by the error and I laugh it off. Once I start talking my voice seems to get a bit lower. It's mostly on the initial answering that I sound like a kid.

42. I have a light voice too, and trouble projecting it,
though not so light that people mistake me for a kid.

But I agree with you, Horse with no Name. We shouldn't have to spend months and lots of money on voice training to change it.

Actually the voice tone that annoys me most is that of men who seem to exaggerate their basso profundo range so what they say comes across as more authoritative--the "Voice of God" effect. I'm sure that sometimes this is deliberate--but unless I know the guy well I can't know if that's what he's doing, or it's his natural voice, so hesitate to criticize there, either.

46. It is called an "ad hominem" and is a very low form of debate typically used
when reason will not prevail, or when backed into a corner. It is often a sign that an argument is being lost, and the loser just attacts the opponent's haircut or debate style, detracting from the argument.

It is also a sign of poor judgement, imho.

You have to wonder if the % of infiltrators at DU is higher or lower than the demonstrators in Chicago '68. Sometimes it seems that a whole crowd of posters is working to give DU a bad wrap!! Does the opposition post over here just so they can quote the bad post?
