BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG FOR TRUTHOUT BY MARK KARLIN

With the release this week of the chairmen's draft of the deficit-reduction commission (National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform), the chickens are ready to come home to roost.

The 18-member "bipartisan" panel, appointed by President Obama, was chaired by and included primarily Washington insiders, part of the Wall Street economic status quo (with a couple of exceptions). The report called for many things, including cutting back Social Security and Medicare and adjusting taxes in a way that won't help the middle class, but will probably provide bigger tax cuts to most of the wealthy. As Paul Krugman concludes, "It will take time to crunch the numbers here, but this proposal clearly represents a major transfer of income upward, from the middle class to a small minority of wealthy Americans."

1. If President Obama signs legislation that cuts SS, Medicare, etc., who do you think they will blame?

3. Its not just repukes talking about this, so are some Democrats. Second, these so-called tea party
folks helped rand paul into office. If they were so much against that idea why did they elect him?

5. They should blame those who vote to cut benefits and Obama if he approves those cuts.

Do we agree on that or not?

4. Not if the republicans and the media can find a way to blame Obama
And I'm guessing that they're already working on that.

Now, how they'll be able to do that and stay consistent with their "Obama is a socialist" theme, I don't have a clue.

But I'll bet they do it.

And tea partiers will buy it.

And Obama will not dispute it. And once again perception will become reality.

6. If President Obama signs off on the cuts that will be easy to do. And if he does that he should be

blamed because he has the power to stop such cuts.

Isn't that right?

13. Well, I'll probably blame him because he formed the commission

But he should be able to see something like that coming long before it happens.

If he boxes himself in by extending the bush millionaire/billionaire tax cuts even for a year his options will be limited.

He's a good president but he sure is a crappy politician.

Edited on Sat Nov-13-10 11:14 AM by Urban Prairie
if it means that tens of millions more "socialists" were to become starving, ill, homeless, or better still just drop dead, IMO. Less liberals means more conservatives are voted into office. That has always been their goal, along with creating legislation that would only permit taxpayers and "property owners" to register to vote. After all, rightwingers are all about "personal responsibility", since prayer, church, friends, family, and charities would help to save many of their aging teabagger members..heh!!

11. Not a chance. The cuts won't effect current seniors, the rest of us are screwed.
They don't care. Period.

12. It all depends on the timing of whatever cuts are proposed
If a raise in the retirement age happens five or ten years in the future, then current seniors aren't going to feel very threatened by that. COLA adjustments are more likely to be opposed, but if they're very subtle, then they may slip under the radar.

Frankly, if you've got twenty to thirty years before retirement age (or more) the handwriting's been on the wall for quite some time, you'll have to make your own plans for retirement income. And if you've got that much time, you've got time to do it.

14. No they won't...
...after Presnit Huckabee and the GOP controlled congress takes away SS, medicare, welfare and a host of other social programs in 2013, and hands the money over to their criminal buddies on wall street, they'll just say it was either Clinton or the black guys fault, and that that they had to do it. That will be just fine with the teabaggers, and they'll turn on whatever the hot reality show of the year is, and go back to the standard jeebus rapturing fantasy-shit that seems to get them through being screwed over by other white folks.

16. Seniors are already angry at us about SS.
For the first time since the 1970s, this past January there was no cost-of-living-increase, and again for 2011 there will not be one. Guess what party held the House, Senate, and Presidency in 2009 & 2010?

18. They'll be in lots of company in their anger, if polls
on this are even close: Only 12% would pick this option:

The survey of voters who cast ballots last Tuesday -- conducted by Democratic pollster PPP and commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee -- found that when respondents were given the choice between cutting the defense budget, raising taxes on the wealthy and cutting Social Security to reduce the deficit, just 12% said they'd like to see the entitlement program cut. Forty-three percent said they'd prefer to see taxes on the wealthy go up, and 22% said cutting the huge defense budget was the best way to go.

Poll: Voters Would Rather Tax The Wealthy Than Cut Social Security
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/11/poll-voters-would-rather-tax-the-wealthy-than-cut-social-security.php

The bank bailouts were even more universally despised across political lines, for similar perceptions. When financially stuggling Americans finally get an occasional big picture of a big heist going down on them, they GET IT.

Krugman:
"It will take time to crunch the numbers here, but this proposal clearly represents a major transfer of income upward, from the middle class to a small minority of wealthy Americans."

21. Considering the way seniors leaned toward the conservative side in this last election...
I find this hilariously funny - fuckers are getting what they deserve. But isn't it better that the billionaires in this country continue to receive their tax cuts - don't they need it more than seniors who are on fixed budgets?
