36. It's possible, but then the next congress will pass the compromise in January retroactively
The House Democrats are irrelevant.

Obama did the compromise with the next Congress, not this one.

It will have 60 votes in either this Senate or the next.

It has now come to a head where congress is ready to say fuck you mr. 0 you have shafted us for too long; you have lost us too many elections, so fuck off.

31. They wouldn't take it up in the fall, before elections, either
When they could have gone into more than 200 congressional districts nationwide and made their case. Obama did it, in September, in Ohio, using his bully pulpit they said he didn't use (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/09/08/remarks-president-economy-parma-ohio). But members of the House didn't want to deal with the issue then: perhaps because they didn't want to offend their wealthy contributors or have Republicans running ads calling them "tax raisers."

So they punted. And at the very 11th hour, knowing full well the Senate would not pass their "clean" version of the bill, made a symbolic last-minute stand, wanting to keep their own asses wiped.

Do they really care about what happens to middle-class families and the unemployed? Or do they just want to put on a facade before they lose total control in a few weeks?

I'm more pissed right now at Congress than I am at Obama. What is their alternative plan? They won't say.

WOW! I'm pleasantly surprised.

Let's see if the estate tax and tax cuts for the wealthy can be cut out. At this point, I'd even be in favor of Chuck Shumer's proposal which would raise the tax breaks up to those making $1,000,000 or less with the UI extension.
