***** Official LIVE BLOG Senate = Tax Cuts Debate *****
Maybe one more thread is a stupid idea, but we need to all get on one page for LIVE BLOG discussion.

http://www.c-span.org/Watch/C-SPAN2.aspx

(It is an old custom on DU to asterisk LIVE BLOG threads and call them "official" even if nothing is official here. Five star threads are also the typical live blog subject format.)

4. Reply here if you want this thread on top and you would like LIVE BLOGs to be unified
in a single thread, instead of a dozen posts repeating the same thing.

Remember, it is not OFFICIAL without five stars

This should be a live blog. Thanks for putting up C Span. So good to see Bernie Sanders bring attn. to NAFTA being a large contributor to our brokeness. ..the fact that it is never mentioned in congress...the fact that it was supposed to solve immigration problems LOL..the fact that strong manufacturing was the reason WE won WWII...the fact that manufacturing is good with a living wage and benefits.

77. Here's what Sanders has to say about what he's doing: "You can call what I am doing today

"You can call what I am doing today whatever you want, you it call it a filibuster, you can call it a very long speech. I'm not here to set any great records or to make a spectacle. I am simply here today to take as long as I can to explain to the American people the fact that we have got to do a lot better than this agreement provides."

234. This is epic
How could you not cry when Bernie was telling about a 50 year old man that is going to have to start walking to work. 8 miles one way. He is sad because he cannot help those in his community who are worse off. From Vermont.

Building consensus . Including conservatives like Alan Greenspan and Paul Volcker who think that the banks should be broken up. Would never have thought a filibuster could be so overwhelming in content.

is a perfect example of how the Dem Caucus should always be. You have the most progressive, and one of the more conservative members of the caucus, presenting an argument that is in the best interest of at least 75% of the country. This is proof that if the Dems could limit stupid internal arguments and stay on message, this is the one party that could rule the country.

pause for thought. They "know" all this, but hearing it laid out like this might be a good reminder and open their eyes.

I love this format. So much more informative than all the "I yield to" "how many minutes do I have"? and they have time to really present their arguments in full.

because Dems usually are all about facts. Facts are dull, and not too exciting to cover. Facts make for a very boring news hour. However, GOP myths & lies are very entertaining. Expect to see the GOP responce to this filibuster covered as if Hoffa was found.

114. The Filibuster: Saying he was prepared to speak "as long as possible" against a tax deal
LIVE streram on his page now: http://sanders.senate.gov/

The Filibuster

Saying he was prepared to speak "as long as possible" against a tax deal between the White House and congressional Republicans, Sen. Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor to make the case against deepening the deficit and widening the income gap in America by extending Bush-era tax breaks for the very wealthy. "I think we can do better, and I am here today to take a strong stand against this bill, and I intend to tell my colleagues and the nation exactly why I am in opposition to this bill. You can call what I am doing today whatever you want, you it call it a filibuster, you can call it a very long speech. I'm not here to set any great records or to make a spectacle. I am simply here today to take as long as I can to explain to the American people the fact that we have got to do a lot better than this agreement provides."

Release: Sanders Statement on Tax Cut Deal

December 7, 2010

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement today on the agreement announced Monday between the White House and congressional Republicans:

“In my view, it is a moral outrage that at a time when this country has a $13.8 trillion national debt, a collapsing middle class and a growing gap between the very rich and everybody else that the Republicans would deny extended unemployment benefits to 2 million workers who are desperately struggling to pay their bills and maintain their dignity. It is also beyond comprehension that the Republicans would hold hostage the entire middle class of this country so that millionaires and billionaires would receive huge tax breaks. In my view, that is not what this country is about and it is not what the American people want to see. Our job is to save the disappearing middle class, not lower taxes for people who are already extraordinarily wealthy and increase the national debt that our children and grandchildren would have to pay.

“The immediate political task in front of us is to rally the American people so that in the next several weeks we can find at least a few Republicans who will join us in saying no to increasing the deficit by giving tax breaks to the wealthy and no to holding the unemployed and the middle class hostage.

“I believe that we have the American people on our side on this issue. My office, and I come from a small state, has received more than 600 calls today, 99 percent of them in opposition to this so-called compromise that the president negotiated with the Republicans.

“I will do everything in my power to stand up for the American middle class and defeat this agreement.”

Because of an obvious conflict of interest based upon the wealth and potential personal Gain from the passage of this legislation, perhaps This issue should be referred to the people for a vote?

148. Bernie Sanders Reads 'Third World America' During Senate Speech, Huffington Post - 21 minutes ago

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) invoked Arianna's book Third World America on Friday during a lengthy Senate speech against the Obama tax cut deal.

During the marathon session, the Vermont senator opened up Arianna's latest book. "I am indebted to a very fine book written by an old friend of mine called Arianna Huffington," he said. "And the title of her book -- and I know why she did it -- is called Third World America."

Sanders then elaborated on the book's title:

"The theme of her book is, if we do not get our act together -- in terms of infrastructure, in terms of education, in terms of health care -- that's where we are headed. This great country is headed in the direction of being a third world nation."

Bernie Sanders Reads Slate. You Should, Too.
Posted Friday, December 10, 2010 3:41 PM | By David Weigel
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/10/bernie-sanders-third-world-america-arianna-huffington_n_795158.html

At what was, at this hour, the midpoint of Sen. Bernie Sanders' quasi-filibuster of the tax cut deal, he pointed viewers to the "very good web site" called Slate and this article by Tom Vanderbilt about why trains run slower now than they did in the 19th century.

It is here that one sees the wheels of progress actually running backward. The aforementioned Montreal Limited, for example, circa 1942, would pull out of New York's Grand Central Station at 11:15 p.m., arriving at Montreal's (now defunct) Windsor Station at 8:25 a.m., a little more than nine hours later. To make that journey today, from New York's Penn Station on the Adirondack, requires a nearly 12-hour ride. The trip from Chicago to Minneapolis via the Olympian Hiawatha in the 1950s took about four and a half hours; today, via Amtrak's Empire Builder, the journey is more than eight hours. Going from Brattleboro, Vt., to New York City on the Boston and Maine Railroad's Washingtonian took less than five hours in 1938; today, Amtrak's Vermonter (the only option) takes six hours—if it's on time, which it isn't, nearly 75 percent of the time.

Bernie Sanders: Waste of time or proving a point?
By Chris Cillizza
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/fix-poll/bernie-sanders-waste-of-time-o.html

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (D) has been speaking on the Senate floor for the better part of the last six hours in a protest of the tax cut compromise that President Obama cut earlier this week.

Sanders' speak-a-thon is only prolonging the inevitable: a cloture vote on the compromise at 3 pm Monday.

But, opponents of the legislation insist the attention his speech is drawing is its own reward -- shining a light on what liberals believe to be a very bad deal.

So, what do you make of the Sanders' stand? Is he proving an important point about the tax compromise or just wasting the Senate's time on a slow Friday afternoon? Vote below.
What do you make of Sen. Bernie Sanders' speak-a-thon?

* Waste of time
* Who is Bernie Sanders?
* Proves an important point

Vermont Democrat rails against tax bill for hours, lone voice in otherwise empty Senate

This is the same AP short story, but

LA Times does not know Bernie is an Independent

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is fighting President Barack Obama's proposed tax cut compromise with a lengthy speech in the Senate.

Sanders, 69, says it is unconscionable to increase the national debt "by giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires who don't need it." He spoke for several hours Friday in an otherwise empty Senate chamber. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., who also opposes the bill, briefly spelled him so he could take a break.

Alone, he will collapse or need to stop. Lesser men would die from this.

Wayne Morse rose on the Senate floor on April 24, 1953. Described as "a lean trim man, with a clipped mustache, sharp nose, and bushy black eyebrows," he began a filibuster against Tidelands Oil legislation. When he concluded after 22 hours and 26 minutes, he had broken the 18-hour record set in 1908 by his mentor, Robert La Follette. Morse kept that distinction until 1957, when Strom Thurmond logged the current record of 24 hours and 18 minutes.

230. SALON: Bernie Sanders' epic tax cut filibuster rant
http://www.salon.com/news/bernard_sanders/?story=/tech/htww/2010/12/10/bernie_sanders_epic_filibuster_rant

The senator brings government to a glorious halt with an extraordinary diatribe against U.S. economic policy
By Andrew Leonard

On CSPAN, six hours after first taking the podium to filibuster against the tax cut deal at around 10:25 a.m. Friday morning, Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is still talking. The CSPAN subtitle is "U.S. Senate: Tax Cuts & Unemployment Benefits," but for the last few minutes he has been blasting trade polices that disadvantage American workers.

But that's fine. His epic rant -- perhaps one of the most extraordinary critiques of how the American economy has been managed over the last several decades delivered in living memory -- is an endless sequence of connecting the dots from one outrage to another. Even as I wrote this paragraph, he segued effortlessly from trade policy to Wall Street.

"But it is not just a disastrous trade policy that has brought us where we are today. The immediate cause of this crisis, and it gets me just sick talking about it ... is what the crooks on Wall Street have done to the American people."

Sanders then delivers a capsule history of deregulation, blasts Alan Greenspan, noted that the late '90s he had predicted everything that ultimately happened, but failed to rally legislative support to stop the runaway train -- "and the rest is unfortunately history."

246. Bernie Sanders has proved he's got the biggest balls in the Senate, and the biggest bladder.
Under Rule XIX of the Senate, senators who have been recognized to speak may do so for as long as they wish, and cannot be forced to cede the floor or even interrupted without their consent, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Sanders has twice deferred to his colleagues — for 45 minutes to Sherrod Brown (D- Ohio), and to Mary Landrieu (D-La.) for over a half hour.

"I don't know how I'm going to vote, but I'm not voting quietly," Landrieu said.

Even when he defers to a colleague, Sanders must remain standing on the floor. He also cannot eat — he hasn't since arriving at the Capitol at 9 a.m. — but is permitted to take sips of water.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1210/46246.html

"By early evening, his name became the most popular term on Twitter both in America and worldwide. The phone lines at Sanders’ office were jammed with calls.

Sanders did not have an end time planned, according to one of his aides, who warned the senator’s staff had prepared a stack of letters and speeches for him to read that was several inches thick. However, Sanders is not allowed to sit down or leave the floor even to use the restroom – although he did take a quick break to take questions from Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown."

Everything Sanders is saying is the truth. (Verified by PoliFact)

People are hurting! Some don't have enough to eat. The safety nets have been cut with more threatened under the GOP takeover of Congress.

What don't these b*$***$ understand? This is not the time to extend tax breaks to the wealthiest, let alone increase the cuts over and above what Bush gave them. That's what the Obama-GOP agreement does.

275. Thanks for the live blog. Here are my thoughts...
I hate the thought of having to compromise on the tax cuts, but no compromise is only in your corner when YOU have the upper hand. Right now the Republicans HAVE the upper hand – more than enough “no” votes in the Senate to keep tax cuts for the wealthy in ANY compromise. If Democratic candidates campaigned on tax cuts for the wealthy during the 2010 Campaign as the President suggested, perhaps 90% rather than 40% of eligible voters would have voted in the midterms and the Democrats would have the upper hand regarding the tax cut controversy, but that’s past history.

Because of the midterm results, Republicans will be in charge of the House and the 60 vote filibuster-proof Senate on the side of Democrats will be out the door come January 1st. At least now a compromise will benefit the middle class, the poor, and the unemployed and small businesses with the extension of unemployment benefits, tax cuts for the middle class, payroll tax cuts, and incentives for small businesses to create jobs. It’s not the best of both worlds, but it’s better than nothing at all. After January 1st when the Republicans are in charge of the House, you can be guaranteed that those benefits will be ‘gone with the wind’.

WE criticized the President and Democrats when we didn’t get the public option but WE didn’t fight for it. We let the Tea Party and health insurance industry do ALL of the squawking and we didn’t start raising Cain until after the fact. WE must deliver the upper hand. WE must speak out in ONE voice. WE must shame the Republicans into ending those tax cuts THROUGHOUT the next two years. WE must hold local rallies. WE must fight for our rights in local AND national newspapers, internet, radio and media outlets. WE must email, fax and call Republican Congressional offices EVERY DAY. We must let Tea Party-backed Republicans know that if they continue to fight for the wealthy and ignore the middle class, the poor and the unemployed, WE WILL vote them out in 2012 and WE must mean it!

Filibernie's Greatest Hits
Josh Harkinson
Fri Dec. 10, 2010 5:37 PM PST
http://motherjones.com/mojo/2010/12/bernie-sanders-filibuster

At 10:24 on Friday morning, Senator Bernard Sanders, an independent from Vermont and self-described socialist, took to the podium in the Senate to denounce the Obama/GOP tax accord. He did not leave for another eight and a half hours. His old-school filibuster, which technically wasn't a filibuster at all, was ignored or downplayed by much of the media. But that didn't stop it from going viral. By early evening, Sanders' name had become the second-most-popular term on Google and tops on Twitter, where untold thousands rallied to his cause under the hash tag #filibernie.

An impassioned tirade of the sort that many liberals had once hoped to hear from the President, the speech was even more interesting in chunks larger than 140 characters. In the (likely) event that you didn't have time to listen to the whole thing, here are some of best excerpts: ......
