Sherrod Brown: "No Deal Mr. President"
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 06:12 AM by sabrina 1
Sherrod Brown posted this diary on Daily Kos today. It is so good to see Democrats standing up against Republicans' bullying tactics at last.

No Deal Mr. President

It’s simple: The deal President Obama struck with Senate Republicans on taxes gives up too much to the super-wealthy without getting enough for the middle class. The Republican strategy of obstruction--their sheer refusal to help Americans in need during the holiday season unless the wealthiest Americans get another tax cut they don’t need and we can’t afford--is morally reprehensible. We shouldn’t give in to that kind of behavior. We should fight it.

Sherrod Brown's diary :: ::

I’m disappointed in the President’s decision to give up so much. But now progressives have a decision of our own to make. Are we going to let this bad deal move forward? Or are we going to stand up and fight for the middle class families who deserve better?

I’m ready to fight. And if you are, too, I hope you’ll take a moment to co-sign my letter to President Obama. Within the first few hours after I announced this campaign on “The Ed Schultz Show” yesterday, more than 3,000 progressives signed the letter--and the more people we have on board, the stronger our case will be that President Obama should go back to the table and get a better deal for working families.

Here's his letter to the President:

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

Dear Mr. President,

With our economy struggling, our working families hurting, and our deficit crisis worsening every year, we need to take action to create jobs, bolster the middle class, and bring our budget into balance.

But the agreement you’ve struck with Senate Republicans is a bad deal. It doubles down on a failed strategy of tax cuts for the super-wealthy that would explode our deficit without strengthening our economy. It’s too high a price to pay for the support of those who have continually refused to put the middle class first.

Instead of giving in to obstruction, we should fight it. I am willing to stay in session as long as it takes to overcome a filibuster and extend both unemployment benefits for jobless Americans and tax cuts for the middle class. If our colleagues on the other side of the aisle want to spend their holidays refusing to help working families struggling to enjoy a Christmas of their own unless their wealthy friends get another bailout, let them.

Mr. President, I know that you share my desire to pass good economic policies that help working families. But a deal that also includes bad policies that will worsen our deficit and fail to help our economy falls short. By standing our ground and standing strong for the middle class, we can do better. And I urge you to do just that.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
U.S. Senator

You can sign the letter HERE

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown give me hope. And I have to add Sen. Mary Landrieu who stood up with Bernie Sanders today. It's rare to find something to thank her for, but today she earned a thank you.

They deserve a lot of gratitude as there are not too many others standing up for the people in DC these days.

19. No Payday Load Scam floated as "payroll tax 'relief'"
No more tax breaks for the rich. Yes, Paris Hilton needs to pay her fair share.
No breaks on inheritance taxes. No, the Walton family does not deserve $32 Billion in tax breaks.

Now, let's throw this "compromise" or "deal" over the cliff.

And then, let's get down to business. Let's see if the Repugs are actually gonna "shut down guvmint", or hold up unemployment insurance, or let tax cuts for those earning less than $250K expire. If they are willing to, then no amount of a "deal" will save this country, or them from the electorate.

Let's also be clear about who these people (President Obama, and now former President Clinton) really are. What do they really work hard for? And whom? And why?

46. "And whom?"...
ah, that is the key question. They work for those who really run this country- the scene in DC is nothing but bread and circus (or a Potemkin Village). A facade designed to make us believe that the republic still lives. It doesn't- it died in '63.

It's nice to see a Democrat standing up for the people. I was very surprised by Mary Landrieu, pleasantly for once. She seemed pretty passionate in her objection to the extension of the Bush tax cuts.

35. I have this sinking feeling
In the end the dems will cave for a few minor concessions like on the estate tax and the neocons will get nearly everything they wanted. Now they can have it both ways. They can blame Obama and the dems for a bad economy and appease the wealthy generating a huge campaign chest for 2012. I don't think they give a shit about the Presidency-they've already got that. After the dems cave they will be toutung how they fought like hell to keep things that weren't really on the table like earned income credits, which Republicans have always supported. Game, set and match.

45. I called Diane Feinstein yesterday to see if she would be
supporting Bernie Sanders. They told me 'she has not issued a statement about that yet'. Weasel words. I asked if they were getting a lot of calls, she 'a few'. Not that it matters, they don't listen to us anyhow. Still it's good to remind them were still out here. I think they forget that as they party with the ones who brought them. Or bought them, probably a better way to put it.

and asked his staff where was he while Bernie Sanders and Sherrod were supporting us? Ans: He couldn't attend because he was at a meeting.

I heard him on TV the day after the big Obama agreement. He sounded positive about the deal meaning another forked tongue political hack who goes along to get along, and said this might lead to more deals (to shaft Americans).

53. Sickening, isn't it? How little they care about us.
Bernie showed them up, and Sherrod and even Mary Landrieu, showing what could happen if all of them had any interest in serving the people rather than their corporate masters.

I have a bad feeling that they will do what they planned to do. When this much money is at stake, the don't give up easily. But it's good to see a few people fight them and expose them all for what they are.
