Bloomberg Says Obama's Democratic Base Should `Suck It Up' on Tax-Cut Deal
By Molly Peterson and Gopal Ratnam
December 12, 2010

President Barack Obama should tell Democrats angered by his compromises with Republicans on extending tax cuts to “suck it up,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Obama “can’t just sit there and depend on ideology” because “leadership is about doing the possible, not sitting around and waiting for the perfect,” Bloomberg said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Bloomberg told business executives in Brooklyn last week that the U.S. economy will stagnate if Congress remains mired in partisan gridlock. Obama should tell Democratic critics his bipartisan tax-cut deal won’t be the only tough vote of his presidency, Bloomberg said on NBC.

(That's right. Next year, Democrats and progressives will be told by President Obama to "suck it up" when he and the Republican party present new proposals to cut government deficits on the backs of working people and the elderly .... the massive cuts that will be proposed by deficit hawks in government jobs, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other programs that benefit the real middle class and the working class. BBI)

“He says, ‘Look, this is what I did, this is the best I can do. Suck it up,’” Bloomberg said, when asked how Obama should deal with Democrats angered by the tax measure and other compromises with Republicans.

15. however you may feel about this deal...
Remember, Bloomberg is a Republican. YES, that is correct. In spite of the fact that the media is always referring to Bloomberg as an "Independent," he is not. He ran on the Republican line all 3 times he ran for NYC mayor, and was opposed by the Democratic Party. He runs against Democrats, and donates piles of money to Republicans. And please, do not ever forget what Bloomberg did during the Republican convention in 2004 in NYC, when he had his gestapo arrest thousands of peaceful protesters for no other reason than to make George W. Bush look good. He is a despicable person who tries to portray himself as something that he is not. Nothing makes me more ill than when Democrats try and portray him as innocuous or some kind of supporter of Democratic principles. The fact that he has the nerve to even address Democrats and tell US how we should feel about anything makes me want to puke.

21. not sure what your point is in saying he used to be a Democrat
Are you trying to suggest that implies that he really thinks like a Democrat? He changed his party affiliation so that he could run against the Democratic nominee for mayor - because Democrats wanted no part of him, and he knew he could never be nominated by the Democratic Party. The fact that he claims he used to be a Democrat shows how unprincipled is, and he is willing to hurt our party for the sake of his own ambition. That's just another thing about him that makes me want to puke. By the way, there's quite a few people who used to be Democrats who have switched to Republican...Jesse Helms, Trent Lott, Strom Thurmond, Elizabeth Dole, David Duke, Rick Perry... The switches are more of a nightmare than those who are lifelong Republicans. And let's not forget Mike Bloomberg's good friend Joe Lieberman, who now also calls himself an "independent" after he was rejected by the Democrats and now joins with Republicans at every twist and turn.

23. It's very strange. There is a weird, small subculture of Bloomberg...
...fans on DU.

It is weird and small, but it's denizens are most determined. They are willfully obstinate: to the point where they will ignore all of the evidence (such as that which you present above --- and much , much, more) and continue to insist that Bloomberg is at heart a Democrat. Not only that but he's a *progressive*.

Their true, full motivation is unclear. But it seems unlikely that they really believe what they claim to believe.

They've been quiet lately, but believe me, they're here. One of DU's enduring mysteries.

Anyhoo.... welcome to DU.

37. the Bloomberg apologists are everywhere
You can't post anything anywhere negative on any forum about Mike Bloomberg without a very quick response from one of his "defenders." I have made several videos attacking him on YouTube, and before I had even finished uploading (I'm totally serious) I had some nutcase leaving comments disputing my points which were undeniable. The impression that I had at the time was that it appeared to be a full-time job. I imagined that when are a billionaire, you can afford to seek out anything negative which is said about you on the Internet, and if not buy the website to eliminate it, at least leave comments to give the impression that he has some kind of grassroots movement behind him. After looking at the demographics on YouTube, by the way, I discovered the comments were not even coming from this country. It was very odd. Of course, I am in no way suggesting that kind of thing goes on in this forum. Just my thoughts from YouTube! And from living in NYC, I am actually painfully aware of the fact that a lot of Democrats actually do like him, or are afraid to say anything that may ruffle his feathers. The fact that Obama failed to do anything to support the Democratic candidate for mayor in the last election was a painful reminder of how Bloomberg scares even the most powerful people from daring to speak out against him.

Bloomberg's Stand On Gay Marriage
Published: February 10, 2005

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9407E7D6163AF933A25751C0A9639C8B63

To the Editor:

Re ''The Mayor and Gay Marriage'' (editorial, Feb. 8):

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg recently decided to appeal the decision by Judge Doris Ling-Cohan that allows same-sex couples the right of civil marriage.

The mayor's main legal argument is that under state law marriage is solely between a man and a woman. Judge Ling-Cohan deserves credit for stating the obvious: the equal protection clause of the New York State Constitution is crystal clear -- that every citizen is entitled to the same rights under our law, including the right to civil marriage.

Mayor Bloomberg now sheepishly claims to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community that he is appealing the decision to ''help'' us by creating an expedited route to the state's highest court. He states that he does not want gay couples hurt by getting married now only to find the marriages voided by a higher court later.

The gay community doesn't need a pat on the head from the mayor, nor do we need him to spare us pain: we face discrimination on a daily basis. What we need from the mayor is moral and political courage. Had he chosen not to appeal this decision, he would have sent a powerful message that denying civil rights to any group is unacceptable under our system of law. Instead he sends a message that, under political pressure, no citizen is safe from discrimination.

In fact it is probably a fairly safe bet that not only you but your extended family including all your aunts, uncles, cousins nieces and nephews could live off Bloomberg's tax cuts for the rest of your lives. It would be interesting to see a calculation of exactly what Bloomberg's tax cut is, but it is definitely many millions.

According to a CBS News survey released Thursday evening, 53 percent of the public says that the cuts should be extended ONLY ONLY ONLY for families making a combined income of less that $250,000 a year, with 26 percent saying the lower tax rates should be continued for all Americans, and 14 percent saying they should be allowed to expire at the end of the year.

The only 26 percent in the CBS News poll who say that the cuts should be extended for all Americans is lower than the figures in other recent surveys.

An Associated Press-CNBC poll released Tuesday indicates that half of those questioned wanted tax cuts to be extended ONLY FOR ONLY FOR ONLY FOR..... for families making under $250,000 a year, with 34 percent saying they should be extended for all Americans, and 14 percent calling for the cuts to sunset for everyone at the end of the year.
--------
Forty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey conducted in the middle of November said the tax cuts should be extended for families making less than $250,000 a year, with another 15 percent saying the cuts should not be extended for anyone. ......That left ONLY ONLY ONLY ...ONLY ....ONLY 35 percent who favor an extension of the tax cuts for all Americans regardless of how much money they make.
