Cuba Fosters Wind-Energy ProspectingHavana, Mar 26 Cuba increases eolian-energy prospecting, by implementing the first towers to measure wind speed in the central province of Ciego de Avila.
Experts from the Cuban Society to Promote Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect, stated that the country is currently making eolian studies in provinces of Pinar del Rio, Villa Clara, Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Guantanamo, and the Isle of Youth special municipality.
The measuring supports in Ciego de Avila are 50 meters high and wind gauges to measure breeze displacement every 10 seconds, the Cuban News Agency reported.
According to previous analysis, those masts have been assembled in flat places, where winds can reach over eight meters per second.
The Ciego de Avila province has more than 500 points with real possibilities to use efficiently air, sun's rays and biomass to generate electricity.
The first Cuban eolian station is located in Turiguano since 1999, with two generating turbines, whose experience was used to install another two larger-capacity plants in the Isle of youth and northern Holguin.
