Troop pull-out urged in Nicaragua-Costa Rica border row
The Organization of American States has urged Nicaragua and Costa Rica to withdraw their security forces from a disputed river border, where there has been tension for a month.

In a resolution, the OAS said the two countries should begin urgent talks to resolve their differences.

Costa Rica accuses Nicaragua of deploying troops inside its territory on an island in the San Juan river.

Nicaragua insists the island is on its side of the border.

Costa Rica welcomed the OAS resolution as a "diplomatic victory" after 22 countries voted in favour, with only Nicaragua and its ally Venezuela voting against.

But Nicaragua says the organisation does not have the authority to rule on border disputes, and says it will not withdraw its troops.

1. Ortega beating the drums of war.
Most be domestic problems in Managua. I am surprised this story is not getting more attention here.

----------------------------------

The naive view, here, that Nicaragua and Venezuela are responsible for tensions between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, leaves out all of the complexities of this situation, with one of the biggest complications being the corrupt, murderous, failed U.S. "war on drugs" and the U.S. government and Pentagon's use of the "war on drugs" to militarize and control their "circle the wagons" area (Central America, the Caribbean and the northern rim of South America--Colombia, and Venezuela's oil coast) for U.S. "free trade for the rich." Anybody wonder why the U.S. gives $7 BILLION in U.S. taxpayer money to the blood-drenched Colombian military, yet the drugs just keep on flowing? Items like the Nicaragua/Costa Rica border dispute need CONTEXT. But neither the corpo-fascist 'news' nor rightwing posters will ever provide it. Headlines are used to create a brief IMPRESSION, that flits through peoples' minds with vague notions about leftist leaders being "aggressive," and then only a superficial, fleeting understanding of the situation is provided, replete with "black holes" where information should be. And the BBCons are as guilty of this propaganda technique, with regard to Latin American leftist leaders, as any of our own corpo-fascist so-called newspapers and faux 'news' broadcasters. Their overseers have FINANCIAL INTERESTS in Latin America just like the media moguls who control 'news' here. (Also, the BBC has never been the same after their "reorganization" following the debacle with the Blair government over David Kelly's anonymous accusations about the "sexed up" Iraq War WMD "evidence." They were once a reliable news organization but, like the New York Slimes, they've "gone to the Dark Side," most notably on Latin America.)

4. While I don't want U.S. troops anywhere near latin america,
surely you can understand that there is a big difference between landing in a country with an invitation vs. invading, right?

5. Good use for the US Marines
I would rather seem them helping Costa Rica, which has a long democratic tradition and lacks an army, against the depredations of the psychologically impaired Nero-like figure leading Nicaragua. I'm sure he'll pull his troops in, because they won't stand a chance against US Marines, they'll turn his troops to shreds. This is really dumb on his part, he's already losing popularity, running roughshod over democratic institutions. Typical communist Latin American autocrat, they're all Fidel Castro clones, arrogant, intolerant of dissent, and in the end huge failures.
