Chavez condemns military intervention in Libya

Venezuela – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is condemning the United States and its European allies for their military intervention in Libya.

Chavez says in a televised speech that the U.S. and its allies simply want to "seize Libya's oil."

He says the United Nations has "infringed on its fundamental principles" by backing the no-fly zone in Libya.

Chavez has long-standing ties to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and had been calling for mediation to help bring a negotiated solution as rebels have been fighting government troops.

Chavez said in a televised speech Saturday, "We know what's going to happen: bombs, bombs, war."

He said foreign powers are wrongly meddling in Libya's "internal conflict," and called that sad and "disgusting."

2. Gaddafi calls a cease fire and bombs a half dozen cities.
Chavez defends him.

4. There was...
...a live phone interview on Al-Jaz from inside Misaratha that was under shelling. Needless to say the fellow in the city didn't approve of Chavez's friend shelling him.

6. Okay, that's the final straw! I've had it with this guy! He needs to go in 2012.
And as joshcryer will confirm, I've been a very staunch supporter of president Chavez. I still believe he has done many great things for his country and has improved the lives of the people of Venezuela enormously, but... I wish he gets defeated in 2012 in favor of another left-winger, more of the likes of Lula or the late Kirchner.
