The Plumline: Pelosi Statement on Drilling
Pelosi Statement On Drilling

“We appreciate the president’s ongoing commitment and call for comprehensive energy reform legislation that is critical to America’s energy independence, economic growth and national security.

“It was important for the American people to hear from the President about the steps being taken by the federal government and the military to lower our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. We welcome the President’s announcement that tomorrow the Administration will finalize standards to increase vehicle fuel efficiency for the first time in more than 30 years. And we support the President in highlighting the federal government’s investment in clean energy that will not only create good-paying American jobs, but also help the environment.

“The Obama Administration’s initiative regarding drilling on public lands must ensure that any offshore and onshore plan proceeds in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner. Taxpayers who own these resources have been historically shortchanged from the huge profits received from drilling on public lands, and must receive a fair return in the future.

“Through the historic and job-creating investments in the Recovery Act, our nation has taken solid steps toward a clean energy future. The clean energy jobs legislation passed by the House last year preserves our manufacturing base, protects consumers, strengthens our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil and keeps America number one by making our country a world leader in new technologies.

“We remain committed to working with the President on comprehensive reform to ensure our nation’s energy security.”

3. Yes, she does...
That's why the RW has honed in on her in recent attacks.

2. If they just gotta do it....
"Taxpayers who own these resources have been historically shortchanged from the huge profits received from drilling on public lands, and must receive a fair return in the future."

Why not create a national public utility to drill for this oil, which returns profits to the federal government's coffers? Then regulating the activity environmentally would take less effort and the people would benefit directly from their own resources. I mean....if you just gotta do it....

5. Not a bad idea...
All those checks given to people in Alaska would be a good start!

California is getting screwed royally in this regard.

6. Except its "socialism"
And ironically, despite the fear, a handful of US states buy energy produced from socialized Canadian energy entities (and therefore, it is the Canadian people that profit from the consumption). But no, can't have that in the US.

There is a lot of money that can be made for the people, or just downright saved, by nationalizing some sectors of the economy that are absolutely essential for production and the general welfare.

8. With Alaska...
I personally feel they concentrate too much on dividends of cold hard cash and not enough on investing in social programs (but thats how Alaskans want it)

I'm not entirely familiar with it, but its not a public utility entity, right? But a fund made from the commission off the sale of resources by private operators.

4. Wonderful balanced statement
I love that she said:
Taxpayers who own these resources have been historically shortchanged from the huge profits received from drilling on public lands, and must receive a fair return in the future.
When you think of things like mountaintop removal by coal companies, the environmental impact has to be considered as it always impacts people - even when not on public lands.
