WEAVERVILLE — Howard Dusenbery was sitting downstairs in the inn he owns with his wife, Kristen, in Weaverville, the Dry Ridge Inn, when a quiet, 65-year-old guest came downstairs for breakfast Saturday morning.
The couple, who bought the inn 10 years ago, asked her what she did the previous day.
“And she says, ‘Well, I met the president,'” Howard Dusenbery said. “And I went, ‘What? Really? Where was that?' And she said, ‘When I was hiking on the parkway.'”

Russell ran into more Secret Service agents, who she said were dressed in all black. They carried a “big, heavy case of some sort,” she said. A woman quickly walked up to Russell and asked her if it was OK for the agents to scan her with a metal detecting wand.
“They went through my pockets and my little waist pack and my camera, they checked to make sure it was a camera,” Russell said. “And then I probably went 10 feet and I couldn't believe it. I just looked up and I said something really stupid, like ‘Are you who I think you are? You are!'”
Russell shook the president and first lady's hands, and told the president she voted for him in 2008. She didn't tell him, however, that she had campaigned for him in Ohio and had been chased off several peoples' properties.
(One man even greeted her with a hunting bow and told her he wasn't interested).
The president and first lady introduced themselves and told Russell to have a nice day, before they moved on down the trail.
“Talk about a strange meeting of time and space,” Russell said. “I was ecstatic, I really was.”
