That way they can help out the state's economy while also enjoying whatever entertainment is down there now.

4. Never. Why-do YOU? Did he say Obama should take vacation in LA?
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 01:43 PM by jenmito
I figured it would drive RWers crazy seeing Obama and his family having fun while doing something they couldn't attack him for.

11. sorry, i misunderstood your intentions- it is something they would suggest
the intention being that they'd be having fun while the gulf coast is suffering. it's a common hypocrisy of theirs- the bush comparison comes to mind- but they get to forget that.

19. Who the hell cares what RWers think, do or say, etc?????!!!!!
These people are insane and any amount of consideration to what will make them happy, or drive them crazy or whatever, is even more insane.

Obama needs to do what he is doing...handling the problem based on what HE knows.

I've never thought Obama has a grasp of areas like Louisiana, S.C., Arkansas or GA. He's spent most of his life in Northern cities and associated a lot with Ivy Leaguers.

In contrast, Franklin Roosevelt spent a lot of his time in South GA at Warm Springs after he contracted polio. It was there he came to really know and appreciate the 'lower' and 'middle' class people. One of my grandfather's friends had told me that a now rare Southern chicken curry called 'Country Captain' became one of Franklin's favourite dishes. Here's a recipe:

http://southernfood.about.com/od/chickenstews/r/bl00206c.htm

Jimmy Carter worked with 'regular people' in the Navy and in Plains GA.

Bill Clinton visited New Orleans both before and after becoming President often and enjoyed himself.

I'd like to see Obama more in touch with regular people instead of the Northern elites. It would do him some good because he is perceived as aloof even by many who voted for him.

But if he spent summer in Louiisana, he might not enjoy it. I'd recommend a cooler time in autumn. ;)

9. There aren't "regular people" in the north?
I live in Florida but have a lot of family in the north, mostly in Michigan, and they are just "regular people" like those in the south. I don't think any region of the country has a stranglehold on "regular people."

12. Plenty of blue collar hard workers live here in New England, my husband is one of them.
Edited on Sat Jun-05-10 08:46 PM by Jennicut
A union guy and all...funny how we get the label of northern elitist the most but Mass, RI and CT all have major blue collar towns.
The South does not have a monopoly on regular people. I am sick of hearing that, personally.

20. You Western elites with your big mountains and all!
Just consider yourself lucky, all I have ever heard since I was a kid was how "elitist" we think of ourselves in New England. Besides having Harvard and Yale, we are not THAT elite. Okay, and having our own versions of bowling...besides, you haven't played bowling unless you have played candlestick and duckpin bowling!

16. I am a Chicago native who lives in South Carolina
I assure you the people in Chicago are just as much "regular people" as those anywhere else. The South does not hold a monopoly on them by any means. Lots of lower and middle class people live in Chicago. I am sure the President knows and "appreciates" these people--especially the lower class folks he helped as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side. This "Northern elites" bullshit is getting really tiresome...

17. I disagree with your characterization of us people who live in the "North" and that Obama
doesn't "have a grasp" of areas like LA. People are the same all over. Don't be like Sarah Palin and the "real America" BS. He should go spend time in LA because that's where the disaster is. And he and his family would have a great time there, I'm sure.

21. yeah there aren't any regular people on the south side of chicago
or are you channeling chris matthews and mean a particular type of regular people?

there hasn't been a president in american history that had more day to day contact with "regular people".

18. There may be tactical reasons why he might choose not to drag his family to NOLA.
Since we're not the SS, I'll defer to the president's (and the people who protect his family), judgement on this. It might make for a nice postcard, but if you're trying to stop the chattering classes from dumping on him, nothing will suffice.
