Uh Oh. Looks like Newt may have pulled a "Steele"
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is predicting that the war in Afghanistan is “not going to end well.”

Gingrich made the comments during a recent visit to Iowa.

"We are in enormous danger because we consistently underestimate how hard this is,” Gingrich said of the war, according to a report from the Des Moines Register.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele recently faced a week of negative press coverage and calls for his resignation after making similar statements at a Republican fundraiser in Connecticut.

But Steele’s rough treatment after suggesting the war in Afghanistan couldn’t be won didn’t seem to faze Gingrich, who charged ahead in arguing that the war likely won’t end in victory.

Gingrich asserted that the counter-insurgency doctrine created by Gen. David Petraeus “doesn't go deep enough for some place like Afghanistan.”

“You're dealing with Afghan culture that is fundamentally different than us, in ways we don't understand,” Gingrich said. The war “is not going to end well.”

Newt may ultimately be right, but at least he is blaming the General and not the President. Hold it........a Republican attacking a General..... Hmmmm well I guess if Michael Steele can survive "stupid" New can survive "correct" If He gets whacked by the pundits for this it will be interesting to watch it unravel.

1. He's made the same mistake Steele did--being so eager to bash Obama
Edited on Wed Jul-14-10 10:34 AM by rocktivity
he doesn't realize that he's also backhandedly bashing Bush. Not that I'm complaining...

8. Exactly. That's why these Repubs keep stepping in it.
It's as if they're on autopilot. If Obama says "up", they say "down". And they do it without thinking.

Keep it up, jerks.

2. Anyone else wondering where all this deep cultural analysis of the Middle East was
Edited on Wed Jul-14-10 10:36 AM by TwilightGardener
when Cheney started these wars? All those years, and all I heard from the RW was "muzzies" and "ragheads" and "Islamic terra" and "kill 'em over there". Now they suddenly predict "it won't end well"--even with the SAME GENERAL they worshiped in 2007. Oh, and how come it's not borderline treason for Newt and Steele to say what they said, but anyone who criticized the wars prior to 2009 hated Murka and wanted troops to fail?

9. "deep cultural analysis" LOL
This is all he's got? Is this sort of superficial "analysis" passing for deep thinking? How lame can you get, Newt?

And this guy has a Ph.D?

5. Shouldn't he have added "Bush made a mistake by starting
that war". After all Bush is responsible for starting two wars. And the republicans are peeing their pants egging to go into Iran next.

7. Too bad we couldn't provide a way for them to attack Iran on their own.
Edited on Wed Jul-14-10 12:11 PM by LiberalFighter
Without US assistance and let the Iranian government know that we won't attack them if they go to war against that group. As long as they attack them on their own soil.

Oh and when the Iranian government succeeds in defeating them we give them international recognition for doing a good thing.
