2. Just what the hell is going to turn them around? Obama comes
out with yet another plan. Infrastructure projects! If we had the money today there wouldn't be any f----g work from these projects for a minimum of 2 years. Besides that they are not real jobs they are make work projects a few highly paid construction workers have work for a couple years. A job is made when an auto company or steel company builds a factory where people actually have long term employment. Then you have this idiotic idea of giving employers money for new equipment. You know what new equipment generally does? It eliminates workers 9 times out of 10. The company I worked for received a $105 million loan to build an electric arc furnace eliminating half the jobs in the plant then after operating it for just 4 years they built another one in the non union south and shut us down.

5. you got to have a road to drive on to get to work
You hit some good points. I am sorry that you lost your job, but remember a strong infrastructure should be considered part of our national defense and security. Eisenhower pushed for Highway Bill funding on the grounds that we needed a national highway for defense purposes. The highway is really there for the convenience of the military, not really for us to drive on. Driving a car is a privilege, not a right.

These public works projects are short term, that is true, but we shouldn't have bridges falling apart like in Minnesota or have a levee break because we didnt want to spend money on short term public works projects.

Also, the bad guys are the owners of the company who took the loan and then stabbed you and your fellow workers in the bank. Not the government.

Make it here. Sell it here. Buy it here.

7. I sympathize with your frustrations
Anecdotal example: The city repaved my street which was already in perfect
condition with no cracks, no pot holes etc. As you say, some highly paid
construction workers made good money but now the project is all done and
it won't create a single new job.

I have been posting here till blue in the face that the most effective
stimulus would be to subsidize those who create the most jobs...SMALL
& MEDIUM businesses. Instead a lot of stimulus was spent on propping up
state & local governments. The money should have been used to give tax
holiday, payroll tax (social & medicare) holiday, tax credits for new
hires, and low interest loans to upgrade manufacturing etc.

However election is 8 weeks away and polls could shift but I won't hold
my breath.

8. All construction jobs generally end
after a few years. It's the nature of the beast. In a healthy economy, there are always new things being built, and repairs to be made. The contrast with factory jobs is a false one. At least most construction work has to be done on-site, not outsourced to Asia or elsewhere.
