With just 10 days to go before the election, a new poll finds that Democratic incumbent Governor Deval Patrick retains a lead over Republican challenger Charles D. Baker in the governor's race.
Patrick garnered 44 percent of likely voters, followed by Baker, with 36 percent, independent Timothy Cahill with 8 percent, and Green-Rainbow Party candidate Jill Stein with 5 percent, in the Western New England College Polling Institute survey.
The telephone survey of 400 people was conducted Sunday through Thursday. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
The institute conducted 525 interviews via landline or cellphone with adults and identified 469 who were registered to vote and, within that number, 400 who were likely voters.
Among the larger sample of registered voters, Patrick held a 13-percentage-point lead, with 45 percent of the vote to 32 percent.
But Tim Vercellotti, director of the polling institute, cautioned that the likely voter percentages were more important indicators.
"Midterm elections traditionally do not have the turnout that we associate with presidential elections," Vercellotti said in a statement. "The key to getting a sense of the electorate's mood is zeroing in on those most likely to vote."
