Here's a suggestion for Reid: call Lieberman's bluff
The reason that Reid let Lieberman have his chairmanship in the first place was because Lieberman threatened to resign from the Senate if he didn't and thus allow Connecticut's Republican Governor Jodi Rell to appoint a Republican Senator. The logic of letting Lieberman keep the chairmanship made sense when it was believed that he would actually vote for Democratic bills. Now that it's clear he's not only not voting for Democratic bills but also not persuadable by any political carrots or sticks, that strategy is no longer a good one.

Instead Reid should just call Lieberman's bluff. Take away his chairmanship until he agrees to stop obstructing health care. If Lieberman in turn resigns then Jodi Rell gets to appoint a Republican to the Senate in a state that voted for the President 61-38 and hasn't elected a Republican to the senate in decades. You can bet your ass that if said Republican wants to be elected in their own right in 2010, they will seriously consider supporting the President's health care reform bill.

2. resign from the senate?
I thought he was just going to leave the caucus? Actually, he wasn't in the position to threaten anything. the fear was that he would leave the caucus.
