Problem with less than-greater than signs

Hi Guys,
I keep trying to post the word "snip" with the "less than" and "greater than" signs around it. Those are the characters above the comma and the period. Every time I use those characters with something between them I get the message below. The post works fine without those characters and with nothing between the characters.
