They say it was just a tough winter... but jeeze... I have never heard of this many not making it thru a winter.

Wildlife managers estimate die-offs in the tens of thousands across thousands of square miles that span prairie in northeastern Montana, the upper Snake River basin in Idaho near Yellowstone National Park and the high country of northwestern Wyoming near the exclusive resort of Jackson.

Throw in unprecedented numbers of tornadoes and the 2nd 500 year flood in the Mississippi basin in 20 years....

Strange Days.... for the the planet that is for sure.

1. Up here in N Idaho we've lost a lot of our herds
This year we have lost many again/ The snow is still dropping in the mts with all the rain we 're getting here in the valley (2200' alt). Our deer, moose and elk calves are decimated by wolves so add that to the herd loss from heavy snow and it's devastating to me.

6. But hunting thins out the herds of the weak and old.
Oh never mind, thats what the wolf packs do.

15. I haven't hunted whitetails since I was teenager ... however I support hunting...
At least here in the U.P. where whitetail deer are abundant, the hunting season helps keep the population in check.

Deer kill more humans each year than all other types of animals combined. Just this week I have seen at 20 deer alongside the highway. 10 yesterday alone.

We have moose ... but the DNR has yet to allow hunting of them since their numbers don't justify it. Although, this week a female moose was hit by a car just a mile from my home.

Thanks for you input.

7. I read the article
Scientists said their aim is to mitigate the effects of the die-offs by reducing pressure placed on herds by such activities as hunting and by delaying opening of wildlife habitat areas to people and vehicles.

16. I can't see why hunting wouldn't be one way to help keep the population
at a sustainable level.

Man has been hunting for millions of years.... I do think we can play a role to alleviate some of the suffering of many of these animals.

11. Well here in the beautiful U.P. of Mich.. I have been seeing whitetails everyday....
Yesterday... driving too and from work, I saw at least 10 deer. Just this week a female moose was hit by a car less than a mile from my home. The authorities believe she had two calves but didn't say if they were able to find them.

17. Maybe those Rapture Ready weirdoes are on to something.
Real soon, Jebus is going to come down from the heavens and lift them all up while the world is in chaos. Looks like all us sinners are going to be left behind.

13. I am not sure... but the last I heard the bees dying has slowed somewhat...
At least it looks as though some of the bees have a least some resistance to whatever was killing them.

19. Mr. Brickbat and I were just saying we wished seeing a whitetail would be a special and exciting
thing, instead of the huge nuisance they are now. We have far too many in our area. I want to take up hunting and help do my part.

The price of food is skyrocketing here in the U.P. and I think putting some meat in the freezer would be a good way to cut expenses.

I went fishing today..Saw 3 more whitetails... and only caught a couple of small native brookies...but I cleaned them up and had a nice little meal along with some fried potatoes.

Fresh brook trout... a pleasure that all people should have.
