Tyler Clementi's parents issue statement about Molly Wei's plea deal
Edited on Sat May-07-11 06:09 PM by pnwmom
After everything they've been through, they have set an example of graciousness and forgiveness.

“We understand that Ms. Wei’s actions, although unlawful, are substantially different in their nature and their extent than those against Tyler’s former roommate,” Tyler’s father, Joseph Clementi, said outside the Middlesex County Courthouse.

Standing next to his wife, Jane, Mr. Clementi said that while Ms. Wei had made a bad decision “without regards to another person’s privacy and dignity,” she deserved another chance. “We hope that Ms. Wei will become a person who makes better decisions,” he said, “a person who helps people and a person who shows kindness to those she comes into contact with.”

The Clementi family said they had no problem with the deal reached between Wei and prosecutors.

"When asked, we advised the prosecutor and the court that we would not object to Ms. Wei's acceptance into the pretrial intervention program," the Clementi family said in a statement.

"We understand that Ms. Wei's actions, although unlawful, were substantially different in their nature and their extent that the actions of Tyler's former roommate."

The statement also noted that Wei was "forthcoming and cooperative" during the investigation. The teen surrendered to police on Sept. 27, 2010.

She will have her criminal record expunged in three years if she cooperates with the probe, completes 300 hours of community service and has a job.

1. "...completes 300 hours of community service and has a job. "
Has a job is a requirement? in this economy? A grad with a criminal record?

2. Good question. Although she won't have a criminal record --
this is some sort of pretrial intervention.

3. And she'll testify against Dharun Ravi, Tyler's roommate and co-defendant.
Her assistance will increase the chances of convictions of the 15 counts against him.

4. That was why she got the deal
Her observing was nothing compared to setting up the cameras. Her testimony will seal this, if I were his attorney, I'd be strong-arming him to cop a plea, any trial will not go well for him.
