Florida Legislative Session Ends with Successful Reform Agenda on Behalf of All Floridians

ALLAHASSEE — With the conclusion of the 2011 legislative session Friday night, the Florida Senate and House made transformational changes by passing a no new taxes budget, reforming outdated government programs, cutting bureaucratic red tape and providing tax relief for all Floridians.

“Floridians sent us to Tallahassee to make meaningful change and cut government spending. I can proudly say - we accomplished their goals,” said Senate President Mike Haridopolos. “We cut government spending by nearly $4 billion, we eliminated duplicative government programs that interfered with a recovering state economy, and we cut taxes for Florida’s residents and small businesses. I’m proud of the work we’ve done these past 60 days.”Despite an on-going economic downtown, the Legislature approved a $69.7 billion state budget that includes no tax or fee increases. The austere budget also provides more than $300 million in tax relief for Floridians including a roll-back of water management district property taxes, a back-to-school sales tax holiday, and a cut in the corporate tax exemption that will remove more than 14,000 small business owners from the tax rolls.

The Legislature also approved sweeping reforms to Medicaid, government pensions and teacher tenure. All three pieces of legislation make needed reforms to outdated programs that have not changed since their inception.
