Newt is running for VP. And he has a chance of being picked on the republican ticket.

It is important to remember that Gingrich played an important, though unofficial position in Cheney's OVP. For example, he accompanied Libby and Cheney to the CI offices investigating Iraqi "WMD." More, he chaired the first "work-up" meeting on Joe Wilson, three months before Wilson's NYT's op-ed ran; that meeting took place in Cheney's office. It is rather difficult to imagine anyone else, unelected and with no official standing, acting in that capacity in Cheney's office.

Newt knows where the power is.
