Apparently Star Trek caught Osama bin Laden!

This weekend, a German news station mistook a Star Trek fan-made image for the emblem for the US Navy SEAL team which to killed Osama bin Laden.

I guess they didn’t notice the Klingon skull, bolted-on eyepatch, phaser, 3 Klingon bat’leth swords or the word “Maquis.”

2. That's the second time I've seen that picture - what's the Star Trek reference?

I don't remember that from any of the original series or NG series. I never saw Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise.

4. Could that be made up by fans?
Many certainly extend the Star Trek mythology.

7. Probably, but none the full emblem and even the components don't ring any bells.
I recently watched ALL of the original Star Trek (Kirk) episodes and ALL of the TNG episodes. Yes, that took a few months. I'm just wondering where the references came from.

5. I think the Maquis pop up in a noticeable way in
Voyager although there was a real Maquis group of rebels in real life.

6. The Maquis were a group from DS9
that rebelled against the Federation to fight an insurgent campaign against the Cardassians (due to the Federation turning over some systems to the Cardassians in the pre-TNG/DS9 era peace treaty). Plus that looks like a type 1 phaser in the logo as well :P.

11. The Cardassians appeared in later episodes of TNG - really thick necks.
In the special features of the full series set, the kid who played Ensign Crusher is going through the Star Trek "museum" at the studio and he gets to the phaser display and refers to one as "the Dustbuster". I almost snorked a beer when I heard that because that's what I had always called them (think "First Contact").

8. It was a fan-made patch
apparently. How a German News agency found it on teh Internets when they were searching for SEAL Team Six, is anyone's guess. As Star Trek is primarily a US series, I suppose that they might not recognize such icons as Klingons, phasers, bat’leth swords or the word “Maquis.”

FWIW, I think this is the patch the Germans were looking for:
