Children play with toys at a makeshift daycare center on May 16 in the Miyagi Prefecture town of Minamisanriku. The municipal government provided space for the one-day event, during which local nursery staff supervised the children and parents had a chance to socialize. Daycare centers in the town have yet to reopen since the Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami, as they were either damaged in the disaster or are being used as evacuation shelters. A woman plants rice seedlings while heavy machinery is used nearby to build temporary housing in Yamada, Iwate Prefecture, on May 15, 2011. This area escaped damage from the tsunami, but fallow fields are being used for the construction of temporary housing for disaster refugees, with heavy machinery becoming a constant presence. Many other areas, meanwhile, have been unable to begin rice-planting because of being flooded with sea water from the tsunami and taking damage to their irrigation systems. (Mainichi)
