It's time for another DU3 PREVIEW! ... Don't be afraid to go over there and POST!
Edited on Tue May-17-11 01:04 PM by Skinner
Many of you are aware that the DU administrators have been working on a complete overhaul of the DU software, which we call "DU3". We have been working hard for the last few months, and we are excited to open it up again for another preview. You can preview the software (AND POST!) at our special preview website:

http://www.du3preview.com

WHAT'S NEW ON DU3?

For a complete explanation of how DU3 improves upon DU2, read this thread: http://www.du3preview.com/10136

If you have already seen an earlier preview of DU3, here is a post listing the upgrades since our last preview in February: http://www.du3preview.com/1013143

* The "My Subscriptions" function is done. You can subscribe to any Group, have it appear in your left-hand navigation, and easily follow it on your "My Subscriptions" page.

* Forum and group have been renamed and re-organized. New forums and groups have been added.

* The "About this forum/group" pages are all working, and a description of each forum/group has been added.

* We now have a "Self-delete" function which allows you to completely delete your own posts.

* There is automatic mobile device detection. And you can set your preferred format through your "My Account" page.

And if you like what you see (or even if you don't), please take a moment to http://www.democraticunderground.com/donate.html">Donate to DU. :)

Please kick and rec this thread so more people can see it.

Only active DU members who registered before January 19, 2011 are eligible to log in and post on the DU3 Preview website. During this software preview, the DU3 Preview website is not accepting new registrations."

26. I was wondering the same thing. Found this:
"You'll have noticed from the list above that along with a few cosmetic adjustments we've also made some fairly significant changes to the "classic" lineup of DU forums. The most important of these are:

General Discussion
We have separated the General Discussion forums in a new way which we hope will make it easier to find the type of discussions you're looking for. Instead of General Discussion and General Discussion: Presidential we now have General Discussion: Recommended Reading and General Discussion: Soapbox.

<snip>

The old DU2 forum Editorials and Other Articles has been rolled into General Discussion: Recommended Reading and the purpose of this new forum is for cross-posting stories and articles found elsewhere on the Web. In this regard the forum is something of a hybrid between the old Editorials and Other Articles forum and the General Discussion forum.

The new General Discussion: Soapbox forum is for posting your own thoughts and rants on politics, issues, and current events. Need to get something off your chest? Just saw a teabagger getting demolished on cable news? Presidential speech coming up at any minute? Post about it here."

http://www.du3preview.com/10136

Makes sense to me! However, I am sure there will be some growing pains meshing GD and GDP together.

36. I love the new breakdown!
GD and GDP have both been... contentious... places over the years. I think Admin has discovered part of the problem: Some people post from their own point of view (soapbox) and some informing DUers through links (recommended reading). It's kind of like a breakdown between news sites and blogs. People will gravitate to the format they prefer. It's an interesting premise, anyway. I hope it works!

If you view your Forums & Groups page in "Show All" mode, then you can see all the forums and groups on one page.

http://www.du3preview.com/?com=forums&mode=show_all

Or you can find them in their categories:

Gardening is under "Recreation & Leisure": http://www.du3preview.com/?com=forum&id=1177

Loners is under "People & Social": http://www.du3preview.com/?com=forum&id=1180

Go to a group.

Click the orange button that says "Subscribe to this Group."

The group will appear on your left-side navigation, on your Forums & Groups page, and on your "My Subscriptions" page.

New threads from subscribed groups will appear on your My Subscriptions page.

34. Question: When I mark a forum as "Read," why do the same posts still
appear in my "My Subscriptions" list. Since I've already read them and even pressed a button to say I've read them, I expected they would no longer appear in my list of subscribed posts. This may be too much to ask, but it seemed curious to me.

All in all, it looks and feels great. As always, clean, fast and contemporary. Good job!

It's kind of my forum of choice. There's always so much crappola one has wade through in the forums. I hate clicking on a promising thread title and getting an inside joke, one word post, etc. The Greatest Page brings the cream to the top.

40. one thing I would like
is a way to say, don't display pictorial signatures or whatever they're called. Currently I block individual ones with adblock, but it is a nuisance.

When I am reading, I don't like a lot of clutter on the screen (some are huge, some are offensive), and I esp. do not like stuff that flashes.

58. Skinner, I've tried for the past two days to log in and it won't let me.
Edited on Wed May-18-11 11:40 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
I've entered the same username and password I use on this version, but it says:

"Incorrect Password

The password you entered for that username is incorrect."

Yesterday I reset my password for my account on this version and then retried today. It still gives the same error.

I've had that problem a few times in the past on this version as well. I've not yet attempted to have the new version resend me a password out of fear it will mess up somehow and not arrive at my email (as has happened each time in the past on this old/current version) but still end up resetting my password. Or whatever it is it does that then leaves me unable to log on until I contact elad for a new one.

It's not a huge big deal at the moment, but I thought I might mention it now before you go live with the new version. :)
