Government ends registration program targeting men from Muslim countries

DETROIT — The U.S. government has ended a controversial counter-terrorism program created in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that required men living in the U.S. who came from mostly Muslim countries to register with federal authorities.

Called NSEERS — National Security Entry-Exit Registration System — the program required registration, interviews and fingerprinting of male visitors 16 and older from Muslim nations as well as North Korea.

The program targeted men entering the country as well as more than 80,000 men already in the U.S. Nearly 13,800 residents were further investigated, and 2,870 were later deported.

But not a single case resulted in anyone being charged with terrorism — a fact that experts say proves the program was a failure that unfairly harassed thousands.

"When what is profitable turns out to be indecent or inhuman, you can not expect shame to work on them. No matter how much you
distrust or hate corporations, you still understand that our social contracts extend to stopping them from doing what they would else-wise
like to do in the pursuit of profits. To stop them from hurting us and helping themselves, we know that they will not regulate themselves,
and it would be unnatural for them to do so. They are not people, for corporations seeking profits regardless of the human costs it is
rational, it is business, and watching out for the humans in that equation... that is what governments are for."
