Asbestos mine owner on Daily Show: Not funny

Bernard Coulombe doesn't think The Daily Show's take on the unfortunately named Quebec town of Asbestos was all that funny.

He's the executive director of the Jeffrey Mine, which was part of the segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart that poked fun at the region against a far more serious backdrop of the illnesses, like cancer, that are associated with asbestos.


According to a news release today from Mr. Coulombe, the segment's sole purpose earlier this month was to discredit him, and make the townsfolk appear as "ignorant imbeciles."

“It was already too late by the time I realized that this program was not a serious news show and that all the host wanted was to make fun of me and the town’s representatives, to insult us and to deliver anti-asbestos propaganda," Mr. Coulombe said in the statement distributed by CNW Telbec.

7. I can understand how someone could be ignorant about a particular

television show, particularly a Canadian being unfamiliar with an American comedy show. What I don't understand is how, if you were to be featured on an umfamiliar tv show, you wouldn't research the show to find out more about it. A quick perusal of google or wiki would tell you everything you needed to know about The Daily Show. I don't think the guy has anyone to blame but himself.

They must say something to the people they interview prior to recording. I often imagine they are told to "play it straight" or some such. You would think... :shrug:

14. A little o/t, but the town of Asbestos has a sad, interesting history and

played a big part in Pierre Trudeau entering politics.
