Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, slaughters his own food
The 27-year-old billionaire said his decision to kill his own meat was part of a “personal challenge” he had set himself to appreciate food more and understand where it comes from.

Earlier this month he announced on his personal Facebook account: “I just killed a pig and a goat.”

After a series of less than positive responses he explained that he wanted to live more sustainably by only eating what he had personally killed. That has included eating the heart, liver and feet of a chicken.

In an email to Fortune magazine he said: “I started thinking about this last year when I had a pig roast at my house. A bunch of people told me that even though they loved eating pork, they really didn't want to think about the fact that the pig used to be alive.

4. Soup stock :)
The only part of a chicken we didn't eat was the crow, and the only part of a pig we didn't eat was the squeal.

27. you haven't had them at a decent Chinese restaurant, then
They remind me a lot of chicken wings: strong umami flavor, but the sauce is the best part. They are bony, though, and can be a pain to eat.

3. Eating meat that comes from a slaughterhouse is a relatively new phenomenon
There is nothing weird about what he is doing here.

What is weird is eating meat and not wanting to think about where it comes from.

5. when I was about his age, i did the same thing
i decided that if i was going to be a meat eater, i'd have to get acquainted with slaughtering my own food, so I slaughtered some chickens, feathered and gutted them. Gave me a new respect for the whole process.

Of course I didn't have a billion dollars.

7. The money didn't really play into it, though, did it?
You did it because you decided that if you were going to be a hunter, you were going to live according to your own principles.

8. He didn't butcher them himself.
Edited on Fri May-27-11 03:48 PM by ohnoyoudidnt
He just went to a farm, cut their throats, and had them sent to a butcher.

19. but he was still hands-on.
I live in an area that is full of hunters. Many make their kill and then take them to a processor or meat locker. It's not that uncommon.

I don't have a problem with this. He's making a connection with what he eats and where it came from. He may eventually learn how to process or he may not. If not, there's always some small-time processor who will be happy to have the extra income.

6. People who live in the country have been doing this for generations
Nothing wrong with it.

I fish, and have family members that hunt, and it is through hunting and animal tending that we became a species that went beyond hunter gatherer technology.

I have a lot of reasons to hate Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's security flaws being the primary reason, but this isn't one of them, and if anything, makes me respect him more.

28. He may have killed a pig and a goat
but I'd be surprised if he butchered them. That's a lot of work, and requires training.

I just wonder if that pig was kosher.

:hi:

(kidding about the kosher pig. I understand Mark Z now considers himself to be atheist, so pork is just fine)

That man has serious mental issues. If it weren't for his theft of face book, he'd probably be a serial killer.

11. I have a new measure of respect for Zuckerberg
I've long felt that one of the problems with our society is being disconnected from where our food comes from.

We have a need to be connected to nature. IF we're not, it's too easy to destroy the world we live in because we have no consideration for it.

15. No. But I know who he is
I grew up on a farm and we knew where our meat came from. When my daughters were old enough, I had them observe when we had someone come to kill and dress our beef.

They knew that an animal gave its life for them to eat.

As much as I see the possible benefit of Facebook, it may be the spawn of the devil loosed upon the world. Remains to be seen.

22. Agreed 100%
Buying a pretty and nicely packaged roast is very disconnected from the realities and horrors that many animals endure before they hit the table.

Raised and killed humanely, I have no problem if people eat meat. I'm sure they'd eat less if they had to do the dirty work themselves.

21. I don't understand the outrage that has been expressed
recently. He's expressed an interest in sustainable farming and really seems to want to understand the connection from farm to plate. I don't always like him but I admire him for bring this into the discussion.

We need more people to do this.

24. I don't see much outrage.
Edited on Fri May-27-11 10:10 PM by ohnoyoudidnt
People just seem to think his desire to kill animals is weird and are not necessarily outraged by it. If he is sincere in the reasons for his actions and isn't just a sadist using this as an excuse, then I would hope to see him use his resources to promote his ideas. He is worth billions, and a billionaire with a good heart can do a lot of good. I will judge him by his future actions and not by the fact that he likes to kill animals.

26. There was a thread about this yesterday
and a few flipped out.

I don't see this as a form of sadism. I do see this as a growing trend of sustainable farming, "getting back to nature"-what have you. Me, I don't know if I could kill a goat, though I have a few coworkers who do every couple of months and freeze the meat. They purchase the goat from an Amish farmer, kill it, and prepare it right there on the farm. (As international students from Saudi and Jordan they've found it's cheaper and easier this way.) They've offered me the opportunity to go in on a purchase of a few goats but I'm not into the meat-I'd prefer keeping one for milk and cheese. :)

I've gone in on purchases for years now with groups of friends for hogs, cows, and even buffalo. We purchase them early in the season and have the farmer butcher in the fall. It's easier that way, taste better, is healthier, and cheaper.

I killed a chicken once and I've fished in the past. That doesn't make me all that much different.

23. The Beekman Boys had a show on how they raised pigs on their farm
and faced the time of slaughter. It was a very moving show. They talked about learning to appreciate the food they eat.
