The other day, members of Colorado's Eyes On Congress went to Longmont, originally to rally outside as Cory Garnder went to make a speech and answer questions for the Longmont 9/12 Tea Party meeting.
We didn't expect to actually go in - this was, after all, a private meeting, we weren't invited, and we were making noise in order to pressure Congressman Gardner to hold public town hall meetings where all constituents were welcome to ask questions.
But something happened. A representative of the Tea Party told us we were welcome to come in, as long as we were respectful and didn't bring our signs! SCORE!!!
We went in. Shook hands with people. Left the signs in our cars. We were very respectful. Congressman Gardner did his little presentation blaming all problems of the government on President Obama, showing dire-looking Powerpoint slides showing the nation on the way to ruin, and explaining that they had to cut Medicare in order to save it.
Then it was questions time.
Several of us immediately took the Congressman to task for supporting the Ryan budget, replacing Medicare with what will turn into a 30%-off coupon to buy private health insurance. One of the Frank Luntz talking points he was using to dodge the questions was the claim that Democrats had never proposed their own solutions.
O RLY?
Another constituent raised his hand, got called, and asked Cory Gardner "Have you taken a look at the Congressional Progressive Caucus's 2012 budget proposal? Could you give us your thoughts on that?"
Gardner stammered "I voted no on those budget proposals. NEXT QUESTION!"
WHOOPS! I thought the Democrats had no alternatives! Looks like Congressman Gardner just contradicted himself!
That's how you do it folks. You've got to organize, get out there, and call your Congressman to account!
Overall, I'd say the Tea Partiers were losing their minds when it was all over. The only questions they had for the Congressman (politely dodged, so as not to provide yet another sound-bite for us...) was things like demanding when he would abolish the Department of Education and do something about the homosexual agenda.
