Texas sheriff issues terrorism warning
http://www.ksat.com/news/28189270/detail.html

Yep, an official terrorism warning has been issued for Bandera County, Texas. Except this doesn't concern Al Qaeda, Hamas, or "sleeper" agents slipping across the border.

Nope, this is about good old fashioned, right-wing, anti-government terrorism. You know, the same kind of terrorism that brought down the federal building in Oklahoma City.

<snip>
The law enforcement agency said followers of The Sovereign Citizens Movement have been known to carry out violent acts, including killing law enforcement officers and other public servants.

The sheriff's office told KSAT-12 News the warning was prompted by the recent shooting death of Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Kenneth Vann.

"We have domestic terrorism right at our doorstep," said Capt. Charlie Hicks of the Bandera County Sheriff's Office.
...
For example, in last May, a father and his teenage son opened fire on two police officers with an assault rifle during a routine traffic stop in West Memphis, Ark. News reports said the incident was sparked by the suspects' refusal to present a valid driver's license. The officers were killed in the shootout and the father and son died in a second shootout with officers a short time later.
<snip>

Been saying it all along, we have more to fear from these gun-toting right-wing extremist nut jobs than we do from any foreign terrorist organization.

2. Yeah that's their mindset. Cops having to deal with these RW scumbags
and with the RW's violent minions can't be easy.

Welcome to DU. :hi:

From what I hear (I don't live there, but own a small property in the county to the south), it's the Sheriff's dept in Bandera who are the real terrorists.

FWIW, Capt. Hicks issued the warning on behalf of Chief Smith, who is an INTERIM Sheriff following the resignation of the previous sheriff who was caught using county property for personal use.

Interim Chief Smith can be voted out, or voted in, in 2012. I think his terrorism warning is all about campaigning. And in a county heavily dependent on seasonal hunting and tourism, such a warning may not do him any good, especially since the recent cop shooting in San Antonio appears to have had nothing to do with Sovereign Citizens.

Edited to add: If you're ever in the area, Busbee's BBQ in Bandera has some of the best Texas BBQ you will ever taste.
