"From the air the nuclear plant looks like it is about to be swallowed up by the Missouri River but on the ground you can see that man is controlling nature, or at least keeping her in check.

Jeff Hanson says, "We're protected far above where this is projected to go. It helps that the facility was built to withstand a 500-year flood event and Hanson says there are feet of protection between the Missouri and the important structures on site.

That was before the aqua dams were put in place. Hanson says the plant has plans and procedures in place and practice flood defense. The aqua dams add another layer of protection from flooding. Jeff Hanson says, "Protecting the vital assets we have sandbagged and placed earthen berms around the substations which guarantees the power can get into the plant to keep the plant powered."

The facility was taken offline to refuel earlier this year so the containment building has been flooded by OPPD in order to cool the fuel rods. Hanson adds they have a number of backup systems in place to continue to pump clean water through the spent fuel pool and into the reactor containment building so he says there is nothing to fear.

80 miles from Nebraska nuclear plant: “Sandbags provide no protection from water coming from underground”

portions of Sioux City, Iowa <...> the main focus now is on groundwater.

The problem is that sandbags provide no protection from water coming from underground, and recent rainfall has provided excess fluid to already saturated property along the river.

“I think hundreds of homes could be affected by the rising groundwater,” said Lee Rettig of Yankton County emergency management.

Nebraska nuke plant totally surrounded by floodwaters: How can Omaha levees hold? Dykes designed for a few weeks of water — 3-4 months expected, with 5+ foot rise
video included

According to Olson, the Nebraska Resource District told area landowners that the dikes in areas of Washington County "were designed to withstand two, maybe three weeks of water, maybe a month." Olson said, "we're talking three to four months of water at that height, how can those levees last, how can they hold?"

Olson estimates that it may take "seven to ten years" for the flooded farmland to return to the rich productive soil that existed before the current ca strophe. During the plane ride our camera also recorded many expensive homes along the river that are underwater.

The Omaha Casino is flooded and the Nuclear Power Plant in Fort Calhoun is surrounded by water, although the levees protecting the facility are holding.

The Army Corps of Engineers did issue a revised projection for the crest of the flood in Blair, Nebraska. The new crest level is two feet higher than the previous projection.

Curium-244 detected for first time outside Fukushima plant – Requires lead shield 20 times thicker than Plutonium-238

<...> Since plutonium and uranium were detected from the samples at the 3 periodic sampling spots collected on April 11 and 25, we conducted americium and curium analyses. As a result, americium 241, curium 242, 243, and 244 were detected as shown in the attachment 3.

Today, we informed the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency and the government of Fukushima Prefecture of the results.

Curium : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curium
"As compared to a competing thermoelectric generator isotope such as 238Pu , 244Cm emits a 500 time greater fluence of neutrons, and its higher gamma emission requires a shield that is 20 times thicker — about 2 inches of lead for a 1 kW source, as compared to 0.1 in for 238Pu."

Ministry of Education, approximately two primary – the first from the soil collected in the town Hukuzima Ookuma 3 km Fukushima, announced that it has detected trace amounts of radioactive curium. Outside the premises at the primary site has been detected for the first time. The ministry “has been released to the outside by accident. But internal exposure to radionuclides that need attention,” he explained.

Curium was believed to be from this time with the operation of the reactor plutonium. Detected in soil collected on May 1 and April 29 at the point of the town Ookuma 2. On the other hand, even trace amounts of americium were detected from the soil, the ministry is “a small amount detected in the atmosphere by nuclear tests in the past” has said.

“Experts don’t know” how radioactive cesium from Fukushima ended up so far southwest of Tokyo, says radiation monitoring specialist

<...> “We never thought that that the nuclear accident would affect our products,” said Susumu Yamaguchi, 58, who heads a farmers’ cooperative in the village of Kiyokawa.

Others want answers: How did radioactive cesium from the reactors at Fukushima end up here?

Tetsuo Iguchi, a specialist on radiation monitoring at Nagoya University, says experts don’t know. <...>

Takanori Eto From University of Tokyo Files Lawsuit Against Japanese Government for Negligence

'Takanori Eto, a recent law school graduate from the University of Tokyo has become the first person to sue the Japanese Government over the nuclear accident caused by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th. Eto filed suit with the Tokyo District Court on April 7, accusing the government of negligence in the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and asked the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) to revoke the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant's license.

"There are dangers inherent in the government's nuclear policy. From the very beginning there were also mistakes made. We also found out that even after the accident the Japanese government was unable to properly protect its people. So I decided that, rather than remain silent, I needed to bring to light these lapses in judgment in a lawsuit," Takanori Eto told reporters at a news conference.

This is the first legal action that has been made regarding the nuclear disaster that is spreading radiation across Japan and the northern hemisphere. A young clean-shaven man sits in front of the camera and calmly speaks about how it will only take $162 USD to file each lawsuit to shut down a nuclear power plant. Takanori spoke out against the governments failure to fully investigate into the nuclear disaster, and it's neglect to conduct safety screening on-site......................."

Japanese gov’t report on Fukushima: “The situation has become extremely severe”

The Japanese government prepared a report on the accident at the Fukushima I nuclear power station (NPS) of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) and submitted it to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on June 7. The findings will be reported at the IAEA ministerial conference due to start on June 20. <...>

The report consists of 13 themes. In the introduction, it points out that “the situation has become extremely severe” in dealing with the Fukushima I accident, due to the circumstances where the accident had to be dealt with in parallel with reconstruction work following the disaster caused by the great earthquake and tsunami. <...>

60 million curies of radiation released from Fukushima — 50 million curies at Chernobyl

ROBERT ALVAREZ : Yes. As you know, the Japanese government, in its report to the IAEA, said it had underestimated the amount of radioactivity released to the atmosphere during the first week and that it amounts to roughly 40 million curies of radioactivity. What they failed to mention is that they discharged an equally large amount into the ocean, about 20 million curies, and that the—what they’re counting here is the radioactive iodine and radioactive cesium. <...>

The Soviet Union and Russia basically have claimed that about 50 million curies of radioactivity were released to the environment <...>

CTBTO has trove of sampling data about Fukushima radiation release — Scientists wonder if equipment may have been miscalibrated

<...> Within 72 hours, scientists had analysed samples taken from the air and transmitted their analysis to Vienna, Austria — the headquarters of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), an international body set up to monitor nuclear weapons tests. <...>

At a meeting held in Vienna from 8-10 June, scientists working with the CTBTO took a moment to reflect on the network’s performance <...> Were ratios of xenon isotopes unusual because reactor physics are poorly understood, or because of equipment being miscalibrated? <...>

Scientists tracking Fukushima release question why radiation spread so quickly to the Southern Hemisphere

<...> At a meeting held in Vienna from 8-10 June, scientists working with the CTBTO took a moment to reflect on the network’s performance. Detection stations tracked the radiation from the accident, and atmospheric models worked well; yet questions remained. Why did the radiation spread so quickly to the Southern Hemisphere? <...>

1. Eh?
It seems that if one's intent is to eliminate the human population from the face of the earth,
being pro-nuclear is the way to go.

I have to consider the idea that the evil mofo's are winning and they will damn near kill all of us.

with the age of our nuclear power plants and their siting I worry if we're to see more in the future of this type events rather than less
