Miss Ignorance USA 2011 discusses Evolution in school
This video of the Miss USA 2011 contestants displays the core of the issue regarding science education. The vast majority of these people do not understand what science is or how it works. The vast majority of these people do not understand what evolution is or how it works. They seem to equate the acceptance of a consensus scientific understanding with belief. They seem to think that there are two sides of some debate. This is what you get when ideology and religion is allowed to dictate education policy regarding what is science.

3. Some of the best answers:
Science is a huge thing.

We need to teach both sides.

It gives the youth, should keep their options open.

Teachers shouldn’t step on the toes of biblical values.

Little bits and pieces of evolution should be taught.

When it comes to little theories, we should stay away from those.

It’s a great subject to touch base on.

I would not encourage it.

Personally I never was taught evolution in school.

You should be knowledged about it.

I don’t know. I think we should leave that up to the government.

You can never have too much knowledge on any subject but evolution should not be taught in schools.

God, that’s a tough one. Yeah, I think so.

4. As we make sport of these folks, one wonders if they went to private school, public,
home school, or church school.

That would be an interesting statistic to publish.

10. this is what I hate about the whole concept of beauty pageants
It promotes beauty over intellect and encourages women to be agreeable to everyone regardless of what they actually may believe. Women should just smile, look nice and be agreeable because they're essentially nothing more than ornaments whose purpose is to be pleasing... ugh.

15. Actually there were far more who sided with evolution
than I thought there would be.

Notice the states of the contestants who didn't believe in eveolution.

16. if you don't teach evolution you pretty much have to chuck most
of biology. And probably a good chunk of natural sciences, physics, chemistry (which supports much of evolutionary theory) and heaven forbid you teach astronomy or cosmology.

My beliefs aside, how would you chose WHICH creation story to teach? I know the answer most people would expect. And if you want to be fair about it, pretty much the only opposing view is "some people believe it was all created." Anything more than that and you are into a specific religion.

19. Science and superstition
are not on equal footing. Promoting religion with tax dollars is a First Amendment violation. There were a couple who made sense. The vast majority were spouting gibberish designed to cloud the issue. Note how many used the words "I think," thus reducing what they had to say as nothing more than opinion. Only one stated her position as fact, Vermont. Of course asking the uneducated to critically think is a stretch. And if you don't like it,------------so what.
