I think this movie's a remake of one we saw a year or three ago.
Back then, the stated goal was healthcare reform. There were two sides: Democrats and repubicans. In that one, the Democrats came out punching and jabbing, the wind at their backs. They fought valiantly and fiercely until they reached the middle. And then they took a few more steps to the right. And *then* they started "negotiating."

This time the stated goal is raising the debt ceiling. In play is our future and our individual well beings. At stake is the well being and health of our seniors and soon-to-be seniors. The race to the middle is a shorter one this time as the Democrats have already said they'd cut these things. The only question now is how much.

FDR and LBJ are rolling in their graves at the move to the right their successors have taken.

Where do YOU draw the line in the sand?

1. "They fought valiantly and fiercely"
Did we see a different movie? Maybe you saw the Director's Cut of that one.

5. I take some comfort from knowing that while the political puppets have moved the
dialogue ever right-ward, the majority of the public hasn't seemed to move to the right with them. At least I like to think so...

8. Why is that comforting?
The fact that our "representatives" move farther and farther from us?

9. At least the public at large isn't given over to reich-wing fantasies. That gives me
hope for the future.

6. It seems more like a replay of the bank bailouts to me.

A whole lot of fearmongering about the national economy, with the same old "hand the wealthy more money or else" argument. And just as then, both sides are playing the same game, pretending the fear actually has some basis in reality when it clearly does not.

It's also reminiscent of the extension of the Bush Tax Cuts. The Democrats oh so reluctantly gave the treasury to the wealthy in exchange for... an agreement to keep what we already had for a few more months. It's all bullshit. These people are on the same side, and it is not ours.

10. And the U.S., as well as the Dem Party, are spiraling down the drain.
And the GOP is there to turn on the disposal.

"The Billionaire tax cuts will not be extended. Period. They have broken the treasury and done absolutely nothing for job creation, and my predecessor's debacle is over." And then stick to it
