Just say, "Come on in!"
Opportunity is knocking for the Democrats. They have a chance to win back the House and maintain control of the Senate. But they are fearful. They are afraid they might lose.
But the President addressed the winning issue in his speech yesterday. It is a about fairness and a social contract. The Republicans want to break this contract and give everything to those at the very top. They want to cut Medicare, Social Security, and every social program that the people have fought to attain over the years.
This is a winning issue for Democrats. But it has to be defined for the voters, otherwise, they will buy into the crap that the Republican Party is selling.
All it takes is a little bit of courage. The Republicans will call it "class warfare". Indeed it is class warfare what they are trying to do to the people of this country. We only need to defend ourselves from their attacks.
Democrats need to take the offensive. Several points need to be made over and over until election day. And nothing will get resolved until after the next election. Government is at a stalemate. Only the people can decide which way they want our nation to go.
First point that needs to be made is that it was George W Bush and the Republicans that disappeared the surplus left by Bill Clinton. They did it with huge taxcuts, unpaid wars, and Medicare drug programs that were nothing more than a payoff to the insurance companies.
Second point is that Barack Obama was left a deficit of $1.3 trillion dollars and an unemployemnt rate that was losing over 700,000 jobs per month! He was not left a surplus as were Bush and the Republicans. He had to do everything he could to keep this country out of a depression. We have still not recovered from the Republican attacks upon our government.
Third point is that we need to do away with the Bush taxcuts and also the tax subsidies for the wealthy - the billionaires, the oil companies, and the hedgefund managers. We need to fix the tax system in this country where it is more fair for the working and middle class people.
Unfortunately, many Democrats are fearful of raising taxes on anyone, even the wealthy. But that is the issue that will sell to the huge majority of voters in this country, including most Democrats and most Independents and some Republicans. It is an opportunity waiting for the Democrats to take as a weapon against those that would harm the elderly, the young, the sick, the workers, at the benefit of the very few at the top. Let them call it class warfare. That is the opportunity waiting on the Democrats. If the Republicans want this battle, we must be ready for the fight. It is about fairness and the social contract of the citizens of this country.
