Florida has been conquered by barbarians. – A glimpse of the future.
Florida’s Governor, Rick Scott, and the Florida Republican-controlled congress, are showing us the knuckle dragger’s vision of America.

The damage they have done and are trying to do is too vast to list here. But let me give you a few examples:

I know a couple of seniors in care centers/nursing homes, who are on Medicaid, and are living in mortal fear that they will, literally, be put out on the street. Scott wants to totally eliminate the existence of Medicaid, and even the concept of it. It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s on the not-to-distant horizon and in the dreams/blueprint of Scott and his ilk. And yes, nursing home residents will have no place to go except the cemetery.

Union busting is of course on their agenda and Scott and his cronies are well on the way to destroying teachers unions, fire fighters unions, police unions, and every other union across the state. What the hell. Let’s just turn teaching over to the fundies, firefighting over to companies that charge to save your house, and policing over to Black Water.

The list of outrages goes on, but you get the idea. And this is not just the America that Rick Scott wants. It’s a glimpse of the America that today’s Republican Party envisions and is doing everything possible to bring about.

Anyone who is not yet aware that America is about to drown in a sea of insanity, needs to wake up. Either that, or spend what's left of their lives wondering what the hell happened while they weren’t paying attention.

Maybe we need a new dungeon? Call it the place 'Truth' goes to die?

Having said that, the OP is quite correct. America is on a track: following the republican vision.

3. It's become very apparent that Republicans are the scum of the Earth.
And it's now becoming very apparent that Florida is one of the major places they go to thrive.

I'm beginning to believe that Florida, and much more of America, has become broken beyond repair. And I'm also beginning to believe I'm a fool for hoping that I will see the return of a sane America in my lifetime.

4. When I was working in social services an memo game across my
desk. Most nursing home patients use up their personal savings within 4 to 5 months. They are then dependent on Medicaid. Thia means that almost all nursing home patients will have no resources what-so-ever. It is not going to be only the elderly who are angry - families are going to be hurt badly either by having to pay it themselves or in having to take the elderly into their own homes.

This is not good for Florida. This governor is absolutely crazy.

6. The obvious question in your post, jwirr, is "What happens to those who don't have families?"
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 12:05 PM by Cyrano
But we know that's of no concern to Republicans who probably think, "Push those beds out of the nursing homes into the middle of the interstate. That'll solve the problem."

I have begun to wonder if our planet is inhabited by two different species: Human beings, and Republicans. But the one thing I am certain of is that most of the elements of the entity called the Republican Party don't give a rats ass if people starve, suffer a miserable existence, live or die.

For any middle class American who doesn't yet get it, the Republican Party has declared war on us. And our response, and the response of our so-called Democratic "leaders," has been non-existent. And these "leaders" may very well be guilty of "criminal indifference."

7. The bill to eliminate Medicaid in Florida was signed by Scott.
They just don't have approval from the feds to initiate the plan. All of Medicaid will be turned over the private insurers who agree that if they make profits over 5%, then they have to share that with the state. Seniors will be the first to be moved to this plan beginning next year.

My mother was just diagnosed with dementia and her doctor told us that she WILL require a long term nursing facility. She has narcissistic personality disorder and is getting worse steadily. Her behavior is becoming even more bizarre than usual and it's difficult to even talk to her any longer. Her cognitive ability and memory are failing fast. She's the kind of dementia patient who will take off all her clothes and take a crap in the middle of street. It's not going to be pretty.

My parents are poor as church mice, with total assests probably under $20,000. Although I hear that if your funeral is pre-paid, that was counted as an asset for applying for Medicaid. They've both prepaid their funerals, but that's not included in the $20k. They are both on SSI, although my mother only held two jobs her entire lie, both for only a couple of years. My father went broke in the 1960's paying for her many illnesses after BC/BS dropped her due to meeting the lifetime maximum. After that no insurance company would touch her. It's been a horrific struggle for my dad who still works a full time job as a night watchman and has a small boat repair business on the side which has pretty much dried up in this economy. They've transferred title of their home to my brother.

No one seems to now right now if and what we need to do to ensure that she has some sort of coverage or if she will be eligible for assistance. There's very little information coming out. I'm attempting to speak to lawyers and the state to find out what our options might be but I'm really worried.

14. Hi, millijac. Welcome to Du. And yes, we understand how bad your situation is
I wish I could wave a wand and fix it. But this is America of the early 21st century and it sucks beyond belief. Far too many here are in similar circumstances, don't know what to do and don't know where to turn.

The fact that this is the result of 30 years of Republican policies doesn't help us change anything at the moment. All I can wish for is that everyone who voted for them goes through what you're going through now. They're ignorant pricks, but my wishing misery on them is just pettiness on my part. No human being should have to suffer through what you and your family are living through.

As far as I know, the federal govt. isn't letting Rick Scott push through his "death plan" at the moment. Hang in there, put pressure on your congressperson, and most of all, write a personal, hand-written letter to President Obama. I really don't know how much good it will do. But I do know that Abraham Lincoln did read letters written to him and often acted upon them.

Of course, there are many more millions of Americans than there were in Lincoln's era. But who knows. Perhaps you'll find the words to reach his conscience -- A conscience that he's kept well-hidden for the past two and a half years.

Write that letter and then get it published on every website, and newspaper letter-to-the-editor section possible. If nothing else, perhaps you can shame Obama into speaking up, acting, and perhaps taking the lead on issues of life and death.

15. If they take away the medicaid from your mom
and you can't find a living arrangement therapeutic to her needs, my fear is the best you and your father can do is get scripts for inexpensive/generic meds to keep her from getting agitated. Yes, it means snowing her. That is compassionate conservatism for you. I suggest you consider relocating to a blue state (but that is no guarantee, as I think even the governors with a D next to their name have been drinking the tea).

12. The vote was split in '08 between Chris Christie and the Dem Candidate
It's the only reason that we have the current swine inhabiting the governor's office.

Two good men were running and one total pig was running.

So, of course, the total pig won.

For the most part, situations like this suck a whole lot. But no one knew how to prevent it.
