"Kids for cash" judge gets 28 years.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44105072/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/t/pennsylvania-judge-gets-years-kids-cash-case/

*snip*

Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in federal prison for taking $1 million in bribes from the builder of a pair of juvenile detention centers in a case that became known as "kids-for-cash."

*snip*

Ciavarella, 61, was tried and convicted of racketeering charges earlier this year. His attorneys had asked for a "reasonable" sentence in court papers, saying, in effect, that he's already been punished enough."The media attention to this matter has exceeded coverage given to many and almost all capital murders, and despite protestation, he will forever be unjustly branded as the 'Kids for Cash' judge," their sentencing memo said.

*snip*

Ciavarella, known for his harsh and autocratic courtroom demeanor, filled the beds of the private lockups with children as young as 10, many of them first-time offenders convicted of petty theft and other minor crimes.

The judge remained defiant after his arrest, insisting the payments were legal and denying he incarcerated youths for money.

How many lives did Judge Ciavarella ruin?
How does 28 years work out when divided by all those lives, including not just the juveniles wrongly incarcerated, but their extended families who got to watch their kids sent off to private jail? A couple of weeks per victim? Judge Ciavarella should be down on his knees before whatever deity rules his life breathing a prayer of thankfulness for getting off so lightly.

11. Not to mention those of his victims who committed
suicide, and there were several, as well as those who are psychologically ruined, many for life. I'll never forget his completely dismissive and nasty response to the mother of a victim who killed himself a couple of years after his release because he couldn't handle it; he'd been sent to a harsh prison for a minor, misdemeanor offense that would have netted a simple fine in front of any other judge, and he'd never even been in trouble before. She angrily confronted him on the courthouse steps and he couldn't have cared less, even tried to make himself out to be HER victim. Unbelievably, he then wanted HER to be arrested for confronting him. Fucker. If that had been my son, I'd probably be in jail for attacking him.

My husband is a judge and is beyond appalled, as were and are a lot of the attorneys I know and have worked for. And how in the hell could those payments in any way have been considered "legal"????

16. His sentencing memo said he'd suffered enough
Because he would forever be "unjustly" branded as the "Kids for Cash" judge. Yeah, no discernible trace of remorse from this pig fucker. I hope the people paying him for supplying them with victims get to go away for life, too.

26. One would certainly hope so. And I'd really like
to know if the fucker had to pay back any of the million bucks he received in exchange for his "favors"? He should have to pay it all back and then some, and if it means he has to sell his house and everything he owns in order to do it, then, oh well, tough shit.

14. They could use a simple formula: 1 year for each year stolen.
He would be in jail until there is justice in America. In other words, forever.

18. I usually alert on posts that advocate prison rape. But in this case, I'll let it pass.
What can I say? I'm not perfect.

8. and STILL he insists he did nothing wrong...
After all of the damage that this thug did, how can I possibly feel bad that he's going to
prison--especially when he continues to be "defiant after his arrest" and deny that "he incarcerated
youths for money".

He is still a psychopath who has no remorse. In fact, he's indignant that he's being punished.

That's sick and worthy of a long prison sentence.

20. Privatization. My niece was placed in a mental hospital in Delaware
for 5 months by a doctor who was taking kickbacks. They finally went to the ombudsman if the state and worked with him to close down the hospital and catch the doctor. This is the results of privatization - sending people to prison/institutions who would never of been there if it were government. Only the idiots do not understand what "For Profit" means.

22. I grew up in Luzerne County
It's the armpit of the universe. Trust me, once they start digging a bit more into the rest of the elected officials of this area, this will seem like small potatoes. The government there is unbelievably corrupt.
