Bachmann Pledges Gas Will Be Less Than $2 a Gallon

By Katrina Trinko

At a town hall meeting in Greenville, S.C., today, Michele Bachmann said if she became president gas prices would fall dramatically.

“Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 per gallon again. That will happen,” Bachmann said, according to The Hill.

Gas is currently averaging $3.58 a gallon, according to AAA.

9. And my usual response, who gives a fuck?
I did a search on the subject line

It didn't come up

The only place where dupes are prohibited are Political Videos and LBN

If I had a PENNY for every time someone posted a dupe of something I posted first I'd be living under a motherfucking palm tree in the South Pacific.

The main difference is that I don't fuck with the people who dupe my threads by posting "Wasn't this posted already?"

Goodbye. Thanks again, Skinner / EarlG / Elad for the ignore list.

5. Why, how nice. And how, exactly, does she propose to control
an international market for a product with international demand, with prices strongly influenced by speculators - especially when Bachmann is certainly against any regulation of commodities speculators? Drill for oil in Alaska and offshore? Sure, except that that oil won't be available for years; it will be sold in the international market because the oil and the oil companies do not "belong" to the United States; and there isn't really that much oil in Alaska - not nearly enough to have a significant effect on oil prices.

But Michele continues to look at the world through rose-colored intestines.

8. Gas prices should stay where they are. In the long term the higher prices
will reduce consumption, and perhaps fewer people will purchase gas guzzler vehicles.

14. Actually, I'm enough of a tinfoil hat guy to think....hmm, could happen for this reason:
It's ultimately to the oil companies advantage to convince the American public that repubs are better for the economy, and I wouldn't put it past them to take a short term loss by lowering gas prices upon the election, or appointment, of a right wing president. "See America? The repubs lowered gas prices! They're the ones on the side of the workin' man and woman". Then prices gradually creep back up, but in the mean time, corporate America reaps windfalls from general right wing economic policies and the temporary lowering of prices is just a good, cynical, long term investment.
I don't particularly believe this is anything but letting my tin foil hat side run wild a little, but I trust these bastards so little, that I put nothing , including a scenario like this, past them, if they thought it would ultimately enrich them even more than now.
I assume that most people, if not virtually everyone, reading this are thinking "that's ridiculous" and 99% of me would agree with you. Again, just speculating on an admittedly pretty far out and unlikely scenario, but there's 1% of me that just wouldn't put this kind of thing past them.

31. Most oil supply comes from nationalized operations
What we do or don't do here has little effect on world oil prices, except in the same way as Libya going offline bumped prices a bit.

If we conserved quite a bit, then there'd be less demand and prices might ease for a little while. If we drilled all-out everywhere we had, then supply would be up a bit (for a little while anyway) and prices might ease for a little while.

One of the main problems is that the rest of the world is willing and able to pay $80 a barrel, and very capable of soaking up any new supply that comes online.

To get back to $2 gas, we'd have to be insulated from the global markets, such as nationalizing the domestic oil industry, and heavily subsidizing the offshore purchasing we'd have to do to gain enough supply...basically, a "Big Government" program that only a few small-scale economies have been able to do.

28. Federal gas tax
is 18.4 cents per gallon ( just looked it up) add to that, state taxes, local taxes and sales tax. Oil companies don't refine oil for free, I don't know how much they charge. Add transportation costs, and overhead and profit for the gas stations. There are 42 gallons of oil in a barrel, they can get 44 gallons of product because of the other chemicals they add. Upshot: gas can only go down to $2 a gallon if the price of oil drops to $40 a barrel, and probably less. In other words, $2 a gallon gas is long gone, and it ain't coming back no matter who is president.
