7 ways Rick Perry would change the U.S. Constitution if he got elected President
See:

1. Abolish life tenure for federal judges
2. Congress should have power to override Supreme Court decisions by 2/3s vote
3. Scrap Federal income tax - so who would pay his salary? This would eliminate Federal government altogether!
4. End direct election of senators
5. Require Federal Government to balance its budget every year - with what revenue??
6. Marriage only occurs between a man and a woman
7. Make abortion illegal throughout the country - Before Roe v. Wade, this issue was left to states.

So how on earth could this man ever have been a Democrat??

2. So Little Ricky doesn't think we're smart enough to vote directly for Senators?!?
What a maroon!
We've only been doing that for 98 years!
"Time to end the great social experiment."
I'll bet this guy's knuckles are all busted, from dragging them on the ground all the time.

They should make a commercial about being the Governor of Texas.
And say, "It's so easy, a caveman can do it."
And then have that one guy look disgusted and walk away from the ad playing on teevee.

LoL

6. Don't be too certain he can't win!
2012 will be a 'wild card' year with continuing high unemployment and resulting unrest. Add to that the fact that 2012 will be the first presidential election year with the Citizens United decision in effect!

9. Don't we all have our favorite amendments?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 11:27 AM by OmahaBlueDog
Conservatives tend to like the 2nd and 10th. We tend to like the 1st, 4th, and 5th.

The 3rd amendment gets no love whatsoever.

8. This is not going to just be a Perry thing - I see Const. Conv. as being a major election issue
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 12:39 AM by OmahaBlueDog
The rationale for the Constitutional Convention will be that the system is broken, and only radical change will fix it.

on edit - Their argument will also be that the states meeting to take these measures up does not automatically mean that they will pass -- so what possibly could be the harm in just holding a convention, right?

1. Abolish life tenure for federal judges
This is the "activist judiciary" rationale. The GOP wants to use term limits to get conservative judges into power. Remember Gingrich and the CWA in '94: they were all gung ho about congressional term limits until they had control of congress.

2. Congress should have power to override Supreme Court decisions by 2/3s vote
Again - the "activist judiciary" rationale.

3. Scrap Federal income tax - so who would pay his salary? This would eliminate Federal government altogether!
..and we would instead get National Sales Tax, which would be "fair" to the extent that the working and middle classes would now completely support the wealthy.

4. End direct election of senators

This one is an interesting debate. We amended the Constitution to dorectly elect Senators. Previously, they were nominated by Governors and ratified by legislatures. The GOP likes this because they hold a lot of midwestern state houses with few people, but two Senators. There is a case to be made (irrespective of the party affiliation issue) that State governments really got cut out of the Federal process in a way that was not intended by the founding fathers when that amendment passed. It would certainly make state house elections far more meaningful.

5. Require Federal Government to balance its budget every year - with what revenue??

Democrats were not always against balanced budgets. harry Truman was a stickler on them. Johnson and Clinton had surplus revenues at point in their administrations. This amendment is really about ending most social spending.

6. Marriage only occurs between a man and a woman
7. Make abortion illegal throughout the country - Before Roe v. Wade, this issue was left to states.

I put these two together for a reason. The Republican party has no intention of passing either of these amendments. Abortion is being made very legally difficult without an amendment, and the GOP knows that marriage equality is a losing proposition for them. They also know that if an abortion amendment is passed, or if Roe is struck, they'll face a major backlash. But, these issues drive conservative christian voters to the polls in ways no other issues do.

Expect to see more of this from the other GOP candidates, and expect these other amendments brought to the table:

- Modification of the 14th Amendment to end "birthright citizenship."
- Outlawing judges from citing Sharia law in rulings (yes, I'm serious)
- Elimination of the Federal obligation to maintain a postal system.

You might also see:
- National right-to-work amendment
- A prohibition of the Federal government mandating a healthcare program (Medicare will somehow be grandfathered in)
- A prohibition of unfunded Federal mandates
- English as the national language
- Prohibition of flag desecration
