That's the tragic line of defense for any bad political shit from our party, isn't it? The truth of our circumstances as citizens without money or influence at the moment is that we've renounced all our political energy, deposited it into two parties. This has gone on so long that all the institutions for policy are out of our hands. So now, being weak, we are made to feel weak. Voters flit from party to party, empowering one then the other as they displease. Sometimes it's for petty shit, sometimes it's for real serious inflicted misery. The point is we have to stay with one or the other, or we can make no pretense of being cared for at all.
In the play, Lear runs to Regan because Goneril has been nasty to him, wants to kick out all but fifty of his followers. Regan tells him twenty-five is all he gets. Lear then is forced to humiliate himself, nonsensically walk back his rage and appeal to Goneril. The sisters let him know how fucking weak he is and how he can't demand shit:
KING LEAR
Those wicked creatures yet do look well-favour'd,
When others are more wicked: not being the worst
Stands in some rank of praise.
To GONERIL
I'll go with thee:
Thy fifty yet doth double five and twenty,
And thou art twice her love.
GONERIL
Hear me, my lord;
What need you five and twenty, ten, or five,
To follow in a house where twice so many
Have a command to tend you?
REGAN
What need one?
We're fucked into tallying up who takes away less of what no one should take away at all. That's some shameful shit.
