The worst thing to happen to CNN was for it to become mainstream and popular. The quality only worsened as it sought to appeal to a larger audience of lunkheads, rather than a small audience of educated people.

3. Outside the USA

here in the UK for example we only get CNN's International Edition. We obviously get BBC and Sky News and have had Al Jazz English since it launched. On satellite and cable CNN may only be part of a news package. The others are on Freeview HD - too built into most flat screens these days.

Over the period of 9/11 I really only watched CNN because for that duration we actually got mainly your own home coverage for a change.

Despite Sky being "Murdoch's" you'd probably appreciate that - better coverage than the BBC in some respects and nothing whatsoever like your Fox.

CNN International, BBC and Al Jazeera English are pretty much a standard part of a lot of cable and satellite service packages all around the world. Why not in America?

I recall a friend once telling me about his trip to the Olympia Brewery in Olympia, Washington. Following their tour the group was invited to sample some of Olympia's finest product. My friend being a forward sort felt it was time to tell the truth and shame the devil. So he said to the pr guy, "now let's be honest. This is not good beer. Aside from a few small producers and a few small specialty products from some of the larger producers, no American beers is actually good beer. Why is it that America has such lousy beer? Probably the worst beer in the world. It's not just European beer that is far superior. Even Mexican beer is far superior! Philippine beer is far superior! Is this an issue of cost! Would the expense of mass producing decent beer in America be prohibitive?" Well the pr guy from Olympia brewery surprisingly agreed with my friend and said that he was probably right. Every country in the world seems to mass produce far superior beer to America. But he went on to explain that the reason has nothing to do with cost. It is purely market testing. American beer has a generic and non-challenging taste.. American beer delivers a broad beer taste along with the alcohol content that appeals to broadest and unfortunately lowest common denominator. Unlike most foreign beer, American beer has little or no challenging bite in its taste. As time has gone on, the public has long forgotten what real beer even taste like and they have come to accept this salty water with a faint beer extract taste as normal and it has become what the public expects. And guess what? In recent years this lousy un-challenging mass produced American beer like Budweiser and Lone Star are being marketed around the world and it is selling and selling very well even in places that have have excellent well established local mass produced beer.

Well anyway (with my apologies to all those who don't know any better and actually thing American beer is good) this is how I think American news services and a great deal of the whole American entertainment industry also works. It appeals to the broadest and unfortunately lowest common denominator. Rather than challenging assumptions it reinforces assumptions. Rather than engaging the public in the complexities of real debate - It either diverts their attention with unimportant celebrity stories and it reports real news stories with the shallowness and watered-down delusion of a bud lite.

12. i can get al jazeera english and i think maybe bbc but not sure. but i do

internet streaming. they wouldn't want us to get something different than what our 'news' tells us now would they? I mean, they work so hard to sell us their narratives. It would be a shame if we got ACTUAL news.
