One Billion Vehicles Now Cruise The Planet
Thu Aug 18, 2011 02:20 PM ET
Content provided by John Voelcker,

How many vehicles are there on Earth?

We'd ask you to guess, except the headline above gives away the answer.

According to industry trade journal Ward's, which added up both reported vehicle registrations and historical trends, the total crossed 1 billion sometime last year.

The vehicles include passenger cars, light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks, and buses, but not off-road or heavy construction vehicles.

2. Until we evolve segway appendages I expect the trend to continue.
Mobility is key for success and a way to social freedom, whether real or imagined.

It's true that in America the need for an automobile of a certain type is a product of Madison Avenue, but in the rest of the world it can mean the difference between rotting in poverty within a remote village or finding an improved lifestyle. For many a 50cc motorcycle is a lifeline.

Though the tally probably doesn't include the aforementioned scooters, I'm surprised there aren't more. I imagine there are destitute communities that have never even seen a four wheeled vehicle. I'm certain that long after industrialized countries switch completely to alternative fuel many in the third world will still be operating Mad Maxed Fiats and Ladas.

5. Diseased planet. Addicted specie.
As a child I used to wonder if all of the air on the planet had gone through an engine. If not, when.

The sad part is, everything we think we need, we don't. We just want the easy way out. Which translates to disease.

7. WOW! If Rep. Hank Johnson of GA. was worried that Guam would capsize
with the addition of a few additional troops he must be in an absolute panic at the prospect of the Earth sinking into the Sun under the weight of all those vehicles.
