The definition of insanity
1966: the Dems thought they could beat Ronald Reagan in the California governor's race by renominating a bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Reagan as a right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: landslide defeat

1970: The Dems thought they could deny Reagan a second term in the governor's mansion by nominating a DIFFERENT bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Reagan THIS Time as a right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: another landslide defeat

1980: The Dems thought they could keep Reagan out of the White House by renominating a bland centrist incumbent and simply assuming the voters would reject Reagan THIS Time as a right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: another landslide defeat

1984: The Dems thought they could beat Reagan for re-election as pres by nominating a DIFFERENT bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Reagan THIS Time as a right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: ANOTHER landslide defeat

1988: The Dems thought they could stop George Bush from winning by nominating a DIFFERENT bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Bush as an elitist right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: Yet another landslide defeat

2000: The Dems thought they could keep George Bush the Second out of the White House by nominating YET ANOTHER bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Bush The Second as an elitist right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: George Bush, who should have been certain to lose big time, was able to keep it close enough to allow his daddy's Supreme Court to steal the election for him.

2004: The Dems thought they could deny Bush The Second a second term by ONCE AGAIN nominating a bland centrist and simply assuming the voters would reject Bush The Second as an elitist right wing-extremist, all the while making no real defense of or case for progressive Democratic principles.

result: Well, you remember.

So why are our leaders planning to try the same thing AGAIN in 2012? Don't they remember that we won in 2008 because our candidate that year(a great guy who was apparently abducted by aliens shortly after Election Day)ran as a progressive and actually stood up to the Right during the campaign?

2. Practice makes perfect..
You don't get to the Olympics the first time you play a sport.

Eventually the Democrats will make bland centrism work for them.

4. The voters did reject Bush, however the corporate media and the Supreme Court didn't, primarily
because "bland centrist" Al Gore was the primary political champion for opening up the Internet to the people and thus enhancing freedom of speech more than anything since the First Amendment was adopted over 200 years ago.

At the risk of blending metaphors, the Internet isn't just a fish, it's the knowledge of how to fish, but some people can't see the forest for the trees.

Thanks for the thread, Ken Burch.

6. Harry Truman has been RIGHT all along.

"I've seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the Fair Deal, and says he really doesn't believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don't want a phony Democrat. If it's a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don't want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign."

---President Harry Truman
