Something else to DU. Be compassionate towards other Duers
If you don't like multiple threads on an unusual happening, simply ignore them. One of the great things about DU is having people all over posting what is going on with them, especially during a crisis. Rather than complaining, or mocking others, let them network and help and share.

Ignore Thread is there for a reason. Use it if multiples/etc offend you and please by compassionate rather than mocking. Someday it may be you.

16. Thank you. It is news, and quite interesting.
Not sure why people feel the need to mock "in my days, we walked uphill to school through the snow, both ways". Just being nice and sitting back and watching and reading while those involved figure it out isn't that difficult.

Hoping that damage is minimal, etc

It's shameful . we don't if there have been injuries or what is next.

As Californians who have been through earthquakes know more could be on the way.

My only suggestion for east coasties is to fill your bathtub with water just in case.

24. Except for a few years during and just after the USAF,
I've lived in NC (born and raised here). We were told there was a fairly large fault line when I was a kid, but I've never been in an earthquake. I hope to never experience one again, either. My heart is still pounding!

This OP is the first "recommend" I've ever given, by the way, although a couple of less nice ones today have gotten the opposite.

53. Ohheckyeah and I are from the same hometown.
It's located west of the Shenandoah Valley in the Alleghany Mountains-about 40 miles from Lewisburg, WVa. Although I've experienced quakes in Calif and SC, I've never been through a quake in Clifton Forge until yesterday, and I'm 65 years old. If I don't ever experience another one here, it'll still be too soon for me! Any force of nature that can move these ancient mountains definitely gets my attention!

I do think a lot of the "the east coast is going to fall into the ocean" jokes are sort of karmic though, in a way, because east coasters do say that same exact thing a lot to west coasters after all their quakes. I heard my mother say it a brazillion times while I was growing up.

52. "Good citizens check for duplicates!" Why do you see that before posting a new thread?
Or did Skinner just throw that in for the hell of it?

There are a good reasons for this rule, one not the least is that it goes a long way to prevent clutter, but the other is that just a few threads on the same subject actually is more informative (isn't that the point, to inform?) rather than multiple threads on the Home Page all simply asking, "Was that an earthquake?" Thread after thread basically saying the same thing which could have easily been added to any of the other existing threads about the earthquake. Did this really help to inform DUers about what was really happening with the earthquake?

But the earthquake aside (are DUers really so easily panicked?) duplicate threads are very common here at DU and it seems that not too many of the "good citizens" ever bother to check for duplicates. Some of the worst offenders of posting duplicates are the prolific DU posters who are well known and evidently just don't care if their thread has already been posted earlier or even the previous day.

Ultimately, news is not news at DU even if it is small news if it does not get reposted at least 3 times the day it happens and then for the next 3 days.
